We recently connected with Honey Nevae and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Honey thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start big picture – what are some of biggest trends you are seeing in your industry?
The biggest trend that I’ve seen over the last 2-3 years has been creating content reels. The feature was first introduced to Instagram back in 2019 only allowing 15 second reels up to now 90 seconds here in 2022. Creating makeup reels vs. just a regular photo post with hashtags doesn’t allow the content to be seen as much as a reel with hashtags does. Staying on top of new trends/updates as far as social media is concerned is super important, especially as a business owner in my opinion. Finding new and exciting ways to target your audience and engage your followers will help keep business a flow amongst other key things.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve loved doing makeup for a very long time. People would notice how I did my own face and would like for me to do theirs. I was very reluctant at first because doing your own face and being able to master someone else’s face are two very different skill sets. A modeling coach named Tianis believed in me so much that she’d start to book me for some of her models photoshoots. Even though I overthought it and was nervous, I still would take the jobs. I’d practice on friends and family until I felt myself getting more comfortable. It wasn’t until Tianis called for what would be my biggest booking thus far. She needed me to complete 14 faces, all ethnicities and skin tones for Webster University’s multi-cultural fashion show. Super afraid again, I took the job! I knew that if I could make it through this, this push would be all that I needed to finally brand myself as a makeup artist. I completed the booking and felt so empowered that I was able to push through my own fears and thoughts. Being a person who knows how to do a lot, I was happy to finally focus on ONE THING! I created my business name off of my nickname, “Honey”. I then created my logo, updated my social media accounts and “Bad Bee Beats by Honey Nevaé” was born!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Just recently, I lost one of the most influential people in my life; my father. Before my father’s passing, I had appointments booked and I’ve never wanted to cancel on clients. I believe my clients special events are just as important and I never want to let them down. The day my father passed, I had a few clients and I didn’t cancel on them even though I was extremely distraught inside due to this sudden news. I did notify my clients of my father passing and assured them that I’d be able to still take them. I wanted to inform them just in case my energy wasn’t as high as it typically is during appointments. The appointments turned out great and I was very proud of myself and it was within those moments that I knew I was stronger than I thought.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My original social media following came from being in music first. I’ve worked with models to get them casted in indie and also major artists music videos. Once I started to rebrand my social media, I kept posting my work and figuring out better ways to display my work until I figured out that making Instagram reels for content was my niche. Having my career in business analytics helped me understand tremendously the impact of reels early on. I had a wedding reel go viral and I haven’t turned back. My advice to someone starting out is, don’t rush yourself nor the process. Continuously study your craft and stay active with posting. Don’t get caught up in “likes”. People are watching more than you’d think.
