We were lucky to catch up with Tosha Marshall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tosha, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The story behind my mission is I started my business when COVID has us all locked in our homes for safety. I have two kids who have eczema. My oldest daughter is now 26 and for the last two years she hasn’t had any breakouts due to using my products. My 8 year old son also has eczema but you cannot tell that he has it. His skin is smooth like butter. I would take them both to the dermatology and the doctor would prescribe some generic cream that would discolor their skin and it was not helping the issue at hand. So I started researching natural remedies and Unrefined Shea Butter was the answer. I started sharing my products with my family and friends and they all suggested that I should start a business because my products were really helping them. That is how Soul Sista Body Essentials was born. I love healing skin.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Tosha Marshall and I am the owner of Soul Sista Body Essentials LLC. I started Soul Sista in 2020 during the Pandemic. The reason I started this business is that I have two kids with Eczema and I have Psoriasis. Over the counter moisturizers did not help our skin at all. During the pandemic I had extra time to research healthier ways to heal our sensitive skin and stumbled upon the benefits of all natural vegan butters such as Kokum, Shea and Mango butters. These butters have made a dramatic difference in our skin. I am most proud of the reviews I receive. My customers have shared stories of how my body butters and oils are making a difference with their skin. Every product is made with love.
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Funny story is that I used my full time pay to fund my small business. I sleep better know that I don’t owe money while starting my small business. That is the reason I am currently working full time and running my business full time!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I began my business I had no earthly clue on how to manage ordering supplies and keeping up with social media and the other small but large task of being a business owner. I wanted to give up immediately but I have four kids who look up to me so giving up was not an option. I learned that slow and steady was the best way to defeat my fears and push through. I also learned that my customers want to know who I am so I decided the best way to do this was to do popups. So every weekend I would do a popup and I have been meeting the most amazing people. I wasn’t sure how I would get customers but I learned that by just being ME was the right way to do it.
