We were lucky to catch up with Tabitha Miller recently and have shared our conversation below.
Tabitha, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Every single person who brings a baby into this world deserves to have those memories documented forever. When I had my daughter, I dealt with a lot of trauma related to the actual birthing experience itself, and the loss of any sense of normalcy having a baby in a pandemic. There are so many things I wish I could go back and look at from the day.. and now, almost 3 years later, I can barely remember anything about it. Everything is such a blur. So I’ve made it my mission to give families something I wasn’t able to have. Memories that will last a lifetime.

Tabitha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tabitha Miller, and I’m a certified birth photographer, and motherhood photographer. I entered the industry in 2020 after having my daughter, and realizing I missed out on memories that I will never get back. There is so much from my own birthing experience that I don’t remember. And I don’t want other moms to have that same experience. I want them to treasure the details that they may have missed. I want them to feel empowered from their birthing experiences. Birth is such a personal experience for each family. Each persons story deserves to be told in a beautiful and professional way, so that’s where I come in! I take pride in delivering Birth Stories that my clients can be proud to share with their friends and families for generations to come.
I have never had a client tell me that they regret hiring a birth photographer. But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard, “I regret NOT hiring a birth photographer”.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
At the start of 2022, my husband and I were really struggling financially. We had an almost two year old daughter, he was working full time while I stayed home and worked on my photography on the side. But photography wasn’t even putting a dent in my bills. I did what I felt like I had to do, and started working full time in retail. We decided that my husband would stay home and work weekends so I could work. I worked for about 8 months before I realized that I had photographed only one birth and maybe two newborn shoots. I felt defeated and really wanted to just give up on photography.
After many long, sleepless nights thinking about what I truly wanted to do with my life, my husband and I decided that my heart is fully in Birth Photography, and I don’t see myself doing anything else. So I restarted. I rebuilt my website, reworked my SEO, reconnected with so many wonderful birth workers in the area, and here I am. Thriving, building my business, becoming a doula alongside my photography business, and doing everything I said I would do!

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Photography equipment is not cheap. I truly started my business with nothing more than an intermediate DSLR camera. I started practicing with that, and once a learned my settings a little, I started charging very little for model calls. Once made a little bit of money from those, I started to invest in new lenses, editing software, and props. I still don’t have the best and most expensive camera, but that’s okay! I completely self funded my business, and it has worked wonderfully for me. Yes, it has been hard and there have been many struggles along the way, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. You don’t have to own all of the most expensive stuff to start a business. If you have talent, a drive to learn and educate yourself, and passion for your craft, you can do what you love and build it from the ground up.
