We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Taryn Schulte. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Taryn below.
Taryn, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
In the beginning of 2020, my husband and I saw that a local business had moved out of storefront in Old Monroe. He made the comment that it would be a good location for a hair salon, that got the wheels turning in my head until the lockdown happened. It was a scary time for everyone, but especially for small businesses. The thought took a back seat while we maneuvered through the middle of that crazy year. Once fall rolled around, I decided to jump feet first into opening my own salon in the tiny town of Old Monroe. We started renovations in October and officially opened the doors to clients in January of 2021. I’ve always loved the town and saw a great opportunity for other potential small businesses and wanted to do my best to grow the town and my business together, hand in hand.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Taryn Schulte and I am the owner and stylist at Monroe Hair Studio in Old Monroe, MO. I specialize in blondes and special occasion styling and makeup. I believe what sets me apart from others, aside from the obvious being high end salon in a small town, is the experience and quality of service provided to my guests. I focus on educating my clients on their hair type, choices in services and product knowledge to the best of my ability. Healthy and beautiful hair is always my top priority! I also try to give back and build up my community by supporting fundraisers, hosting events, and promoting other small businesses.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building an audience on social media is something that is essential in business today. I’m in no way an expert, but I do my best to keep all of my social media platforms cohesive and eye appealing. For those just starting out, I would say find a look and stick with it. Chose a color palette that compliments your business logo and the vibe of your business. Make sure photos are clear and look visually appealing and always stay on brand. The visual appearance of your social media accounts will be the first thing that draw people in. Your content is just as important, so make sure to keep everything relevant and to the point. Lastly, make sure you keep your target audience in mind and keep your focus on them. Social media is a great tool, but word of mouth will always be the best advertisement you can have.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing clientele will always be word of mouth referrals. That isn’t something that you can buy, it takes time and dedication to build up loyal clientele and a reputation that supersedes you. The best way to do that is to be genuine and thorough with each guest interaction, every time. Transparency also goes a long way! I’m always honest with my clients about my schedule and availability and I respect their time as much as I hope they respect mine. I do not double book appointments and give my clients my full attention when they are in my chair. In addition to all of this, making sure clients always leave happy with beautiful hair. All of these things should be happening anyway, the word of mouth referrals are just an added benefit.
