We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Julie Garey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Julie, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
One blessing about COVID was that I had the chance to slow down, and focus on something for myself. I had always been interested in meditation and mediumship, however never pursued it. After working in the healthcare field for 20 years, I was feeling a little burnt out. I decided to focus on something that would ease my own stress, and bring some positivity to my life. My journey towards becoming a reiki master and medium started with attending one single virtual meditation class. I loved it and wanted more. I signed up for a second class, and before long I had taken quite a few classes and programs on spiritual healing. A medium I went to see suggested that I try reiki healing. Each door that opened was even more fascinating than the last, and I just kept following the bread crumb trail.
I decided to take the leap and opened up an online business, since I had never owned my own business before this presented with many challenges. First I had to build my own website from the ground up. I decided that Wix web builder would be a good fit for me since it also had a scheduler built into the program and a way to except payment. It took hours every night after my day job for 4 weeks before it was finished. I had to learn how to keep track of spending and income for taxes, along with setting up my business as an LLC with the state. I offered online only sessions for a 18 months, when I decided that in addition to having an online presence I needed to have a physical space to see clients in-person. Several clients had impressed upon me that they really would prefer an in-person session to a virtual one. I contemplated this for a while, but realized if I didn’t make a change I was going to be missing out on client bookings.
About 6 months prior I came across a post, where a woman was trying to find someone to sublet her office space. I inquired about the rental, and hours before I was to tour the space, she ended up offering it to another interested client. I decided that it was for the best, since I wanted to spend more time with my kiddos over the summer months. Fast forward 4 months later, while driving to my day job, I started to think about that same office again. Wishing that I could have rented that space. I made it to work and, with in 30 seconds of sitting down at my desk, I received a text message from that same woman, from months earlier. That office space next to hers was available for rent. Since I only needed the space part time I was able to get a friend to split the rent with me. This was a great fit for both of us starting out our own new businesses. We could split the space, office furnishings, utilities and rent. We moved in and have started seeing clients in the new space in Wilmington, DE. This low cost space gave me a way to expand, high rewards with low financial risks. Since moving in clients have told me that they love the environment and I love the energy in the new location. As always, I am blessed to have the Universe and spirit guiding me.
Julie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an Angel Reiki master and medium in the Pennsylvania/Delaware area. Energy healing sessions with me include removing heavy dense energy stored in the chakras of the body, and channeling through pure light and love energy. Stress and anxiety that our bodies hold on to, can be released during a reiki session, which leaves the client feeling more love, peace, ease and grace. In addition I also connect with angels, spirit guides and loved ones who have crossed over to the Other Side. I give evidence of who the loved one are, and bring through the messages they want to communicate. Clients often receive words of wisdom, guidance, support and love from the Other Side. Clients almost always tell me how relaxed they feel at the end of the session, and in some cases how one single session can change their life forever.
We’d love to hear about you met your business partner.
I met my business partner in one of the continuing education classes I have been taking for over the past year. Continuing to grow and learn is so important in any field that you are in. This one particular class meets online once each week, and in addition to the education, it has been a great way to meet new people with the same interests as myself and bounce ideas off of each other. After meeting for a year together in this class I realized that we had the same goals, were in the same position with starting up a business and could work well with each other.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Well I have not received many client bookings from social media, I am well aware of how important it is to have a social media presence. Social media is free advertising and a way to get your business name out there. You need to have at least 2 social media accounts, if not more, and post as often as you can. Reels are a great way to get individuals attention. I take the time to write one long meaningful post per week, and in between short posts or pics as time allows.
