Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Perry Robinson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Perry thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I started Athletic Scholars Brand about 10 months after being medically discharged from the military, unsure about what I would be doing with my life next, struggling with my mental health, and I asked God for my purpose. As clear as you could possibly get, God blessed me in placing this thought on my mind to start an organization and serve him. As cliche as it may sound, I honestly believe that God’s timing is perfect, especially in blessing me to start this organization and serve in my purpose, so whenever he would’ve put this on my heart, it would’ve all led to this.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My organization, Athletic Scholars Brand Incorporated, is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization that focuses our efforts on awarding scholarships and community outreach efforts. I love sports, loved sports my entire life, played sports, and knew I wanted to be around sports to some capacity, so to be able to have an organization that allows us to award scholarships to athletes in pursuit of higher education, help them to gain offers, and inform them of the importance to setting yourself up by doing the work in the classroom, to be ready when a Nick Saben or Deion Sanders calls is the goal. Our organization takes pride in every opportunity we’ve had to help an athlete, to impact a life, to inspire and motivate someone to move forward in a positive direction. We also love the opportunity to host sporting events, going to schools and talking to students about their futures, hosting school supply drives and helping the homeless. God blesses us to be able to be a blessing to others, so we try to help as many people as possible.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Gary Vaynerchuk speaks very often about empathy, accountability, and humility, and I truly attempt to adopt these principles with my organization’s team., I always tell them that we’re the 96’ Bulls, I’m Phil Jackson and every one of them is Michael Jordan, I can’t do it without them. I practice transparency and I’m never out worked, which in turn, allows them to see that I’ll never ask of them to do anything that I wouldn’t do. I really care and appreciate each member of our team, not in the cliche “this team is a family” ideal, but the fact that my team really is my family. This organization is my baby, it takes a village to raise one, so I try to forever keep that in mind.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Our organization is a 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization, being built strictly off of donations, and money out of my pocket. I had a conversation with someone the other day, asking how do we award scholarships, and we host fundraisers, we have events, I’ve come out of pocket countless times for those in need, because if I have it and you need it, it’s a blessing that I can give to you. You don’t do anything quid pro quo with God, but knowing his promises and how he takes care of his children that serve him, you have an awareness that what you give will come back.
