We were lucky to catch up with Kristen Baker recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kristen , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Honestly I’ve always felt I was going to go into a creative field. I started out as a child actor, but I always loved hair and design. Started doing my friends hair in high school, can’t say it was the best, but thank goodness for us being “different” they still rocked whatever I gave them. Being artistic in life has always been my passion.

Kristen , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the owner of NOW Salon, located in Fair Oaks Ranch, Tx. I’ve been a stylist for 17 years and the salon has been in business 12. I have been a color educator for 6 years and that’s where I thrive. I see my clients as a blank canvas and I’m the artist creating a work of art. What I’m most proud of is taking my art out of this country and traveling to Ireland and London along side my husband, Luis Chevere, sharing our knowledge on stage in front of stylists who want to learn.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Honestly for me, I know I was put on this earth to help others. Being able to change someone’s whole mood or see their inner beauty is the most rewarding part for me. We aren’t just stylists we are therapists, friends, consolers, and sometimes the kick in the butt you need. We wear a lot of hats behind the chair and that is something I love.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
So I came from an era of hair prior to the explosion of instagram. Initially I used it just for personal use. My husband actually introduced me to using it as a tool to build my business. Let me tell you it’s hard work! We would set about an hour aside each night where we were just active on Instagram, liking, commenting, following. This was something we had to do, the more active you were the more your page was seen. Now the algorithm has changed many times since then, so my best advice is to look up articles on how current socials are working and what can give you the move visibility.
