We recently connected with Jourdan Truth McGowan and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jourdan Truth, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?

Back when I was in undergrad school at Stillman College, I took an elective painting class. My professor saw something in me and my work that she believed could be special. She later on convinced me that I could be an art major. I took that chance and changed my major to art. The following year I transferred to the University of Alabama where I got my art degree in 2017. After graduating, I had a few art related jobs and didn’t really know what I was going to do work wise. I decided in 2018 I was going to bet on myself and start my own art business doing commission work, teaching art lessons, and selling original art. The first couple years were tough trying to get my footing in the business world but I have some traction now and Art of Truth is alive.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

I’ve been a working professional artist since 2018. My medium usually consist of acrylic on canvas or acrylic on wood. Being a commission painter, I thrive on pleasing my clients. They’re not many limitations on what I can create for someone. Portraits are my specialty, but I can paint anything that’s requested. I’ve been a full time artist for 4 years now and I have 4 awards from juried art shows to my name. Lately I’ve been working on getting my original pieces into galleries around the south and eventually venturing out west and up north. Most of my clients and customers find me on social media, Instagram and TikTok have been my biggest tools.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?

A lesson I had to unlearn was that it is okay if plans change. I used to be really big on my initial plan working out. Becoming an artist and small business owner, I realized that I was going to have to be okay with adjusting and plans changing. Honestly, it made me a better artist because it made my perspective bigger and made my problem solving skills much stronger. You can find beauty in adversity if you look at it with a open mind.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?

The most rewarding part of being an artist to me is seeing my clients, customers, and viewers react to my artwork. If my work can make you feel something I feel like I’ve done my job.
