We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brandon Owens a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brandon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Growing up, when I listened to music I would always sing and hum the instruments and never the lyrics. I always had an interest in music as a whole. At age 12, I got my first instrument, an electric guitar. I got into playing guitar because I loved the game Guitar Hero and I wanted to learn how to play the songs on an actual guitar. I taught myself how to play with the help of some YouTube videos. After a few years of playing guitar, I felt like I could do more. My interest then grew into DJing. I started making mixes at age 15, but I got more invested into the craft my freshman year of college. Along with DJing, I also started producing my own music. Since the time I started producing and engineering, I have been honored to be awarded 2nd place in the Southeastern Composer’s League Annual Student Composer Contest, teamed up with Out East Records LLC as their engineer, helped growing businesses with audio issues, and continuing to use my talents to help others make their dream into a reality. The moment I knew that I wanted to pursue audio engineering was when a talented friend of mine needed help with a single being mixed and mastered. I got the file sent to me and I went straight to work. I sent it back the next day and he was amazed by my work. The moment he told me how I nailed the mix is when I knew that this is what I wanted to do. I made a deal with him to put me on the team as the engineer and from then on, I have been the official engineer for OutEast Records LLC. The feeling of being a part of someone’s artistic and musical expression is a feeling that can not be better.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My only mission driving my creative journey is to be better than myself. Each day I live life by thinking how can I outdo myself from yesterday. Same reasoning applies to my music: How can I make a better beat? A better drum pattern? A better engineering project? How can I be better at what I do so that I can be the best?
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
There was a period of time where I struggled with my identity. As a musician, or as a normal person, I have various music tastes. I would listen to Hip Hop, Rock, Metal, R&B, Classical pieces, movie and game soundtracks, just about anything that sounded good to me. There were many people who thought of my tastes in music weird, creepy, something that I “don’t look like I listen to”. However, I never thought that what I listened to defined my character or gave me a label. If anything, my diverse musical library is what sets me apart from other producers, DJs, and engineers.
