We were lucky to catch up with Kiersten B recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kiersten thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s start with education – we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can better prepare students for a more fulfilling life and career
Something i would change about the education system is the curriculum. A lot of things we have learned in school we do not apply in our everyday lives. If i had a say so i would interpret skills and trades in education. I would allow students to pick a trade or skill they like and than i would allow them to mainly take those courses to learn how to do whatever it is they want to do when they graduate!
Kiersten, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kiersten B, im 33 and i always loved to do hair as a child and always wanted to open my own hair salon. I took cosmetology in high school, than after i graduation i went to college and got a ba in business than i finish cosmetology school and got my license. I than started workin in a salon and while there i started my hair line called KKOLLECTIONZHAIR. 3 years later i was finally able to open up my own hair salon and i am now at year 5. Different service i specialize in is hair extensions, locs, silk press, natural hair, and certain braid styles. Some things i would say that set me apart from other people is I ride my own wave. I try to treat people the way that i would want to be treated and i try to set good vibes and energy in my salon that clients and other entrepreneurs would want to come to. Something i am most proud of is that i can say i did it. No matter what was thrown at me u never gave up and kept pushing. My children will have something that i left for them! Im creating generational wealth and breaking cycles. On my bad days when i go into my salon i still give it my best and smile. Being positive when everything seem do dark goes a long way.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The lesson i had to unlearn was to always look out for me first. Stop thinking that people have the same heart as you! I also learned that every action do not need a reaction. I once use to give my all to a person and thought certain people was my family and whole time they were not for me!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
I saved up my money i made from doing clients hair and when i had enough to start investing i made the investment.
