Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jaclyn Mayes-Avíla . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jaclyn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
Unfortunately, most companies see Human Resources as a necessary evil and will work against us instead of in partnership. The strategy should be people (employees) first to drive bottom line results.
Jaclyn , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My expertise is working with small businesses without an HR Department. I thrive on developing the organizational structure for the largest asset. I develop SOPs, policies, benefit design, talent acquisition and compliance for companies. I’ve had the honor of working in IT Consulting, Healthcare, Facilities & Maintenance, Science Testing, and Entertainment to name a few. I differentiate myself by allowing myself to let my freak flag fly, I’m known as the Unorthodox HR Lady for a reason. People gravitate to me because I provide psychological freedom for them to voice their feelings from joy to frustration without fear of persecution. If there is an issue or policy to be discussed it’s discussed and documented as necessary. My job is also to mitigate risk at all capacity, but I have doing it. People usually walk away from our conversations with knowledge, confidence, and a decent laugh. It’s part of my contribution to make a positive impact in our workforce.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Let’s talk generational trauma. I’ve had to learn about inherited character flaws in my family history for me to connect with others. The only way to move forward in any aspect of life is to learn all the things to unlearn and dismantle for a better system. Doesn’t matter what needs to be broken but if you don’t know the history you are doomed to repeat it.
That got heavy. :)
Any advice for managing a team?
Listen and inform. Not all topics from leadership need to be communicated to the organization, however, if it affects the frontline you’d better get your team onboard. People give more when they feel engaged, valued and cared for. Learn your employees names, their personal lives and ask them related questions. You’d be surprised how far a personal conversation will go with employees when you treat them like humans not a number.
