We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Sarah Rue. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Sarah below.
Alright, Sarah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Absolute stubbornness. It is only because I am stubborn that I am here. I never relent, and I never fail to see something through to the end as long as it’s worth fighting for.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
15 years ago, my journalism teacher took a risk on me and put a camera in my hands. From childhood, I’d loved photography, I’d loved the idea of capturing the energy of a moment, but I was never that focused on any one thing when I was young to become half-decent. My mentor could tell after years of teaching that I was a kid from an unstable home and I needed something to hold onto. It started simply enough with shooting for my high school yearbook and newspaper. Today, photography represents the glue that holds my life together. Capturing moments has allowed me to live millions of lifetimes, all in one single existence when you think about it thoroughly. I’ve covered rock stars on tour, revolutionaries taking action in the streets, and right down to the everyday beauty of capturing newlywed couples of their happiest of days. I think one of the things I’m most proud of at this point is my ability to get back up and keep going even when it all seems hopeless. This stubbornness is what differentiates me from others.
When it comes down to SRP as it enters it’s fifteenth year in business, my main goal is just to capture the purest energy of my clients. You don’t come to me because you want something Pinterest perfect and traditional. You come to me because I’m weird, whimsical and because of the woah factor. I want to create a climate where all clients can truly be themselves whether it be in a studio session or on their wedding day.
Any advice for managing a team?
How you walk into the room is key. If you walk in carrying all of the struggles of your previous day, or all the struggles from what’s going on at home, they spill over and your team will notice.
The notion that we need to keep things at the door sounds harsh in these times, but it’s still true.
Delineation matters.
We as artists, leaders, entrepreneurs, can set the tone of room just by walking in and taking charge with a positive attitude.
Or we can disrupt the flow if we don’t have ourselves centered.
Life is hard, and everyone around you is going through it most likely as much as you are, if not more.
Walk into every room, every work place, every gig and treat every human being with the same kindness you’d like to receive on your darkest day.
If that means at times you have to step back to re-center yourself, then it’s your responsibility to do so.
However, at the end of the day you are responsible for the energy you bring into any environment and therefore how your team will perceive you.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Simultaneously being in complete control of certain aspects of creative endeavors and completely not in control of others. Balance. It’s good for the soul.
