We recently connected with Trent Rowland and have shared our conversation below.
Trent, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
When it comes to songwriting, it really was a trial and error process for me. I found that I had a passion for it rather quickly and was able to channel my emotions into words with enough practice! If I had been better at playing the guitar, it probably would have gone smoother! But I think that my self-taught style really allowed me to think outside of the box and try some unique things a more learned player would not have.
That is one of the essential skills of songwriting, I’d say. I think that you have to have the ability to take the structures that are in place and that work, and try to subvert them in a way that is unique. No one wants to hear the same song over and over. I also don’t want to write the same song over and over! Each one I tackle, I try to make sure that I’m doing something different from the last one.
You’ll always want more time and money. Time is the greatest resource, so I think it’s all about making sure you carve time out of your day for your work that means something to you. You will reap rewards in time. In fact, the work itself is a reward!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Hello, friends! My name is Trent Rowland and I am an Songwriter, Musician and Actor.
Personally, I lead a rock/metal project called Silver Cave. I always wrote the music for the project, but I’ve begun producing it as well! I’m in the final stages of preparing my latest EP called Ill-Equipped.
I am also a freelance songwriter that works primarily with the service Songfinch, providing custom songs for special occasions. It’s an honor being dropped into the loving personal lives of their clients and a fun challenge to create a lasting memory for people that I’ve never met before!
I’m very proud of Silver Cave! I love to show how much heart and intimate, personal detail I can put into my songwriting. I think that these details provide a fuller picture of the heart of the writer and connect on a deeper level with listeners. I’m proud of the way I can incorporate this style into aggressive rock and metal music in a way that I find to be unique. I like to call it singer-songwriter metal!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it is simply to have an outlet for all of the thoughts in my head and the feelings in my heart! To have any opportunity at all to will those things into existence and to process those emotions is a wonderfully rewarding experience. I’ve learned to really love the process of these things and not care as much about the result. Art and creative endeavors are inherently subjective, so I just make sure that I am proud of it. If I can achieve that, then I am happy!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
If I had to say that I had a goal, it would be that I could pursue my songwriting full-time and have all of the resources that I need to make it sound as perfect as possible. Many people have endless wells of brilliant ideas, but not the resources to make them a reality. I’m far from a brilliant man, but I have much in my heart to express! I’d love the resources to make that happen all the time!
