We were lucky to catch up with Alena Uhl recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Alena, thanks for joining us today. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Yes i do. And i know a lot of small business do thise as well. When we send our packages we put work into it besides the product that the customer is buying. We put a personal note, and extra gift a small token of appreciation for the purchase. You wont find an big company do that like amazon or any other stores/online shopping
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
About myself I came to United States 15 years ago from a small country called Belarus next to Russia and Ukraine. I started from zero and climed my way to where I am now. I started my small business in November of 2020. Started it as a hobby just to see if I can do it and make extra money on top of my full-time job.
I do resin craft like keychains jewelry trays Sun Catchers ashtrays and anything else you can think of.
Unlike the big Corporation I do a 101 with my customer asking them what colors would they like of certain things and then show them the finished product before I send it to them just in case they need me to do something different for them.
I am most proud of not only about my business but amazing owners of small business that most of them have one person doing the craft Post in it online being the videographer the photographer the publicist the promoter all in one
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Yes. I use Etsy shop because it shows more of the shop and the stuff that I have available and the prices, the details about the product and the shipping information and tracking number. But Etsy takes a lot of your percentage for their fees and posting on the website which is really unfair how much they take for themselves its almost not worth use Etsy but thats what i have for now.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
That’s what’s so great about small businesses. Every customer becomes your instant friend, you make a connection and a friendship. Especially on instagram, its much easier to do that. When people follow you you can follow them back and react to each other stories and like each other posts, or exchange messages and it becomes like couple of friends just hanging out. Small businesses is very personal, we understand of customers needs and wants. Even if we have something available we always offer a different color or size of their choice. That makes easier to get more clients because we give them options and choices and make them feel welcomes and comfortable with what ever they need.
