We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tyler Keye a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tyler, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
What a great question. I consider my mom to be my biggest cheerleader other than my husband. Growing up, I witnessed her sacrifice for me and my brother in order to provide us with opportunities she never had. A lot of my creativity and determination comes from her; she never gives up and she always has an idea. In addition, my mother taught me to persevere through setbacks and it has served me well as an adult and business owner.

Tyler, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello, my name is Tyler Keye. I absolutely love making people feel good through makeup artistry.
In the beginning, I attempted to teach myself make-up by watching YouTube tutorials. As a result, it became almost like an escape for me. My ego was channeled in a kind of fun way, and I gained a little confidence as well. The majority of my practice was performed on myself, friends, and my mother.
In 2019, I mostly did makeup for friends and family but I barely had a consisitent client base. Gradually, I built up my makeup kit, put myself out there more, and eventually took a makeup course in Nashville from a celebrity makeup artist. It really wasn’t until 2020 for things to really take off for me, which is crazy considering we were and are still in the middle of a pandemic. Even so, I realize that God has been the one who has brought me to where I am now, and I am still growing.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love this question. The most rewarding thing for me is having that ability to make someone feel good about themselves. The feeling I get when someone looks in the mirror after I’ve finished their makeup and I can just see the smile on their face and how amazed they are is absolutely unmatched. The fact that I was able to boost their confidence and make them feel really good about themselves melts my heart everytime.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think when people hear “Makeup Artist” they tend to think I just play in makeup all day and that’s not the case. Makeup Artistry is a business! The beauty industry is always changing, meaning that there’s always new trends and techniques to learn. As an MUA, you have to market yourself/ network, stay on top of your social media and make sure to keep track of your finances.
