We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christine Ricci a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christine, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
My parents were amazing, though I definitely wouldn’t have used that word when they were raising me. One of the many great things they did for me was to let me fail. They didn’t solve my problems and they didn’t come to my rescue when I made poor decisions. They always let me live out the consequences of my decisions so I could learn, get smarter and better.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a nurse by trade and furthered my education in business and IT. I spent half of my career in large business and the other half in small business. The common thread throughout is going in and taking an unhealthy entity (person, business unit, entire business) and turning it into a very healthy entity.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Being raised in Chicago, with 5 siblings and very little money, we had to fight for everything we needed. Everyone worked their way through high school and knew that college wasn’t a choice, it was a mandate, therefore keeping each sibling focused on earning a scholarship or earning enough money to pay for college.
For me, the way my parents kept me focused on this journey and out of trouble, was through sports. I knew I wanted to become a nurse and the only way I could afford nursing school was through an athletic scholarship, which I earned a Division 1 scholarship to the University of Louisville.
Life’s journey has really been about earning everything accomplished, Path’s to the goals were never easy, but also it was never an option to not reach a goal. My goals have always been fixed. The path to accomplish the goal was never fixed, yet typically an array of options that needed to be put together through trial & error, typically guided by a coach or mentor.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Coaching and mentorship has always been game changing for me. Someone honest enough to tell you what you’ may not want to hear and someone trusted enough to help guide you during your weakest moments. You have to be humble and vulnerable, but is essential for growth.
