We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lynn Marie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Lynn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
If I were starting over, I would tell myself to have more patience. Being an independent artist you never know what is going to happen. One month you could be booked every day with writes, shows, writers rounds, ect. and the next you might be doing nothing besides your day job and taking care of every day life. I think it’s important to remember that creativity has a life of its own. There might be times when we can dictate a small portion of what the outcome might look like, but how, when, and what comes out can be completely different that what is expected or even hoped for. If I had had patience with myself and the outcome of my artistry from the beginning, I might’ve discovered these revelations sooner and at this point spent my time becoming a better version of who I am now.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 25 year old singer/songwriter and indie artist based in Nashville, TN. I have had music as my craft for over a decade and have been writing songs of my own just over half that time. Driven by passion, faith, and a love for my craft, I live my life in pursuit of helping people get to a deeper place of revelation, connection, and comfort with God. Whether by music, cooking you a meal, or sharing a conversation over coffee, creating a space of sanctuary and comfort through those things are highly important to me and I hope that even through my songs I can at least inspire the language and emotion for whoever is listening.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative so far has been being able to use my story and the things I’ve learned so far to help others in similar places. I am no expert at life, and still have so many things I learn every day. But if something I have walked through turns into a one on one conversation or a song that resonates with someone, I feel happy in knowing that what I went through was worth it if even for that one moment.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I love love love the book “The war of Art” by Steven Pressfield. It talks about overcoming big to small resistances that hold us back from our creative potential. It has challenged me to look deeper into myself for the real reasons I choose something else over my craft, and gives a swift kick in the pants to get moving when you discover these things.
