We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Emily Montgomery a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Emily, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
When I was younger, I always dreamed of becoming a nurse. I did 5 years of prenursing in college and even got my CNA certification. I have worked at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta during the time I was in school. The one thing holding me back was entrance exams. I always struggled with test taking & studying due to having to work 2 jobs while I’m school. Eventually life happened, I got married and got pregnant with my son. I had recently received a camera for Christmas and thought I would start photography so I could capture my sons life like my mother did for me. I was very discouraged when starting photography because it’s definitely not as easy as it may seem. I actually stopped using it for a while. I had always wanted to do photography because I loved taking pictures but I could never take the leap of faith to start a photography business because the only thing I knew was health care and customer service. I had a spark light back up and I put fear aside and started my photography business a few month before my son was born and since then, it was blossomed! I have gained a great following, have had several people book with me and continue to book with me, and even was nominated for best of Georgia. I recently decided to start getting into the wedding industry & now I’m on the vendor list for my favorite wedding venue. My first solid wedding is actually this Sunday 10/16. I had a pinch me moment when I hit 600 followers which may not seem like a lot , but for someone who never thought she could never be successful at anything because she didn’t finish school, it was huge! This is only the beginning to my journey, but I just want to inspire other small business or people who are dreaming of starting their business to just do it, take the leap of faith and believe me, you will be so proud of yourself when you look back in 6 months or 1 year from now!
Emily, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi, my name is Emily, I’m 26 from Flowery Branch, Georgia. I’m married to my highschool sweetheart heart & have a 1 year old son named Owen. I have always had a passion for taking pictures but never had the courage to start photography.
I originally went to school for nursing and currently I’m a medical assistant for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.
Back I around Christmas of 2020 I purchased my first camera and was very discouraged. I had done so much research before I got my camera but it is definitely harder than it looks. I put my camera away for some time until I found out I was pregnant with my son. I made a pact to myself that I would start to learn my camera so I could capture his life in photos like my mom did for me.
I started doing free shoots of friends and family and then started charging for sessions. Here I am 2 years later and I have a blossoming photography business! I have grown so much and even have started doing weddings. I love capturing raw authentic moments of my clients & love any chance I get to be creative!
The type of sessions I do are weddings, couples, maternity, lifestyle newborn, and families.
I look forward to possibly working with those who read this!
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
I would absolutely love to travel for photography! There are so many beautiful places in the world that would be a dream to shoot at!
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Definitely word of mouth! I do a lot on social media to gain clients but having people recommend me is the best feeling in the world!
