We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Sean Carter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Sean, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
The Mission behind Unchained Memories is that we focus on people’s hopes and dreams. In life, we’ve all been through a time in which we all wanted to pursue a dream, but was afraid to try due to the amount of excuses we tell ourselves. We hold all of our hopes, dreams, and memories in our hearts and in our brains so that’s how our logo was created. Unchained Memories is all about following your heart, doing what you love with confidence and happiness. Those that want to support you will support you, and those that don’t that’s ok.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Sean Carter, owner of Unchained Memories, a streetwear apparel brand. It was founded in 2020 where I found myself wanting to develop a brand that allows people to believe in themselves and feel comfortable in the clothing they are in. As I began my journey of being a business owner, I noticed that there were a lot of high dollar clothing items that had materials that wasn’t really up to par. What I strive to do with Unchained Memories is to make sure each piece of clothing is comfortable, long-lasting, and stylish. I believe as an owner if the clothing isn’t comfortable on me, I definitely don’t want my customers to wear it either. I’m very particular about the material of clothing I use for my collection because I believe in top-tier customer satisfaction. Over the course of two years with my company I’m most proud of the connections I’ve made and the returning customers I received. I am so glad they love my products and I love to inspire people that it doesn’t matter what you want to do, just go out there and give it everything you got!
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
When it comes to how I put together my initial capital for my business, It’s all thanks to my full-time job. There have been plenty of paychecks that I know I took a small portion of it just to make sure I had all the necessary things to keep it going. Everything from a tent, vendor fees, shipping bags, the materials to put on the clothing, marketing, etc. To this day two years in I still will pay for some things out of pocket but I am extremely blessed to have money coming in for my business.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The number one thing that has helped me the most when building my clientele was to be apart of a lot of pop-up shops. It never mattered where in middle Tennessee it was located. If I could make it work within my full-time job schedule, I would book it just to gain that exposure. Although, at times it can get very tiring to always be at a different pop-up shop every weekend, but I’ve found success in gaining a lot of my customers along with returning customers. It’s even gotten to a point that I have my customers reach out to me because just so they can know where to find me in the upcoming weekends.
