We were lucky to catch up with Carla Thomas recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Carla thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Honestly, BERRY Fabulous Berries wasn’t planned to be a business at all. I was a single mom & it was my oldest son’s 11th grade year in high school. I was just looking for a way to make extra money so that he would have the Senior Year he would never forget & also find something I enjoyed doing that wouldn’t have me away from home working so much. I worked part-time on weekends so for about 3 or 4 weekends I would go to the store and buy strawberries & chocolate. Finally I decided to post it on Facebook and from there I got my very first customer. The excitement grew right then. I didn’t even have a name yet & that’s how BERRY Fabulous Berries was born.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
One of the things I’m most Proud of is teaching. When the pandemic came along I decided to offer classes for others that wanted to learn how to dip chocolate covered strawberries & candy apples. Most of my students are now small business owners as well. I’ve also taught a class via zoom to a student in Michigan. I actually love teaching better than anything. I love to see people passionate about what they do, while doing what they love. I look forward to teaching more in the future. Right now I’m teaching one on one classes but look forward to holding a larger class soon.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I know it was social media that helped build my reputation. I post often and the biggest bonus is when people share my work. I don’t think people truly understand how they help people when they share pictures or videos. Social media is helpful in so many ways.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I wish it was. YouTube & Pinterest were my go to places for ideas. I researched YouTube more than ever all while working on my dipping skills. Reason why teaching has become one of my favorite things to do. It’s hard to find people to help you when trying to build a business & when trying to build a brand support from people who is already working in a likewise business is amazing.
