Alright, Mister Davey Jones thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?
At a time when I was just started performing live. I wanted to hone my skills, and stage presence so I started out doing local open mics. Open Mics are a good way for any up and coming talent whether it be music or comic to perform in front of an audience. I performed at a restaurant by the name of Mex 1, a cantina located in Mt. Pleasant South Carolina. I can remember wearing a mauve colored suit and being nervous as it got closer to my time to perform. As I began setting up my camera to record my performance a man walked over to me and started a conversation. I didn’t know it at the time but this would lead to an opportunity to perform in front of a larger crowd. He asked was I an artist? I responded with a “Yes Sir” and he went on to introduce himself. His name was Eddie White. He was in charge of setting up acts for a venue by the name of Awendaw Green. I wasn’t sure It was something I would be able to do as I hadn’t assembled much material for liver performances at that point. He first asked me if I would be interested in doing the event and then assured me that “Yeah, you’ll be there. Not only will you be there but your going to be great.” Before I had much of a chance to respond he was gone. He did however get my email earlier after confirming I was an artist. Sure enough after about a month the email came to confirm my participation in the event. I had almost two months to gather my intellectual property and fashion it into a performance. In the email he specified that he wanted me to do a 30 minute performance. That was to be the longest time I had been on stage up to that point. Despite my nervousness and reservations I rose to the challenge. I showed up and did my set. The crowd was warm, and inviting. Later on Mr Eddie gave me 100 dollars for coming out and doing the show. This marked a significant moment for my art.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m a Charleston native raised in the town of Hollywood,South Carolina. A rural area headed toward Savannah, Georgia. Music has been a part of my life since the day of my inception. My father introduced me to jazz and my mother introduced me to soul music. As I grew older I found hip hop and started to write my own songs in the genre. During my high school years I’ve played alto sax in the school band. This gave me an honest appreciation for what a group of live instruments could do together. It wasn’t until 2020 that I decided to build a business around my songwriting however. At the start of the Pandemic was when I started releasing songs onto streaming platforms. I’ve continued to take an independent approach to promotion by working the open mic circuit in my area and surrounding cities. My company is currently gearing up to provide custom music services for businesses in the surrounding area. A promotional effort that will cultivate relationships between our organization and others locally. I believe how the music we’re putting out differs from a lot of what’s heard now is that we try to use session musicians in the creation of most of our production. I find that there is no substitute for the soul given to our work by actual people. It’s my belief that the imagery and sound of our music will set our brand apart from others as we go forward.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist to me is the act of creation. I believe creation is a part of the super power God has has passed on to human beings. On a small scale we have the power to devise a system and set it into motion. Not only that but you have the ability to take an idea from nothing to something tangible. Although I’ve observed this fact through the years of my life, it still astounds me.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I’ve seen my social media numbers rise pretty well over the last few months, primarily on Instagram. This is my platform of choice. I have to say most of the growth I’ve seen has been directly attributed to my use of ads. As a creative I once thought that you create something great and people just navigate towards it. It’s a pretty naive way of thinking. The power of advertisement is that it puts whatever your thing is in front of people so that they can make a choice. Some will like it, most may not. No one has the ability to like what they don’t know exists. That being said advertising is a super power all in itself. Even more powerful when it’s done effectively.
