Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Geoffrey Boyd. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Geoffrey, appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
In hindsight, I believe that we started Outdoors With Geoff Media at the perfect time. It was March 2020 and we were in the beginning of the pandemic lockdown and like many I found that I had more time at home and I fell into a deep dive of my passions. I knew that I had what it took when it came to showing people how to make great barbecue. I was not so sure on how to convey that message into great content for YouTube and Instagram. My first cooking videos were pretty cringe, but I invested in cameras, mics and lighting and most importantly, I learned how to edit, which bridged the gap between the time I needed to get new equipment while still putting out quality content.
I also think we started right on time because during the pandemic, people were staying home and cooking more due to restaurants being closed. Home projects were up and people were also buying more grills and smokers to spend time outside, so we definitely picked up a following there.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Sure! My name is Geoffrey Boyd and I founded Outdoors With Geoff Media. My main focus is teaching people through digital media that Barbecue can be easy and fun. I teach the basics of barbecuing and grilling while focusing on getting out of the norm and exploring other flavor profiles in barbecue besides the usual sweet rubs and sauces. Not knocking them cause I love them as well! But you can do more with a grill. One of my most recent cooks was a Spatchcocked Tandoori Chicken with a Mint Yogurt Sauce that I made on a Kamado Style Cooker.
I love to take time and focus on the details of the cook to teach the basics and create recipes that are easy to follow, but are enjoyed by those new to barbecue and seasoned Pitmasters as well. I also teach techniques across a variety of different cookers and focus on the different flavors that different woods can bring to a cook. It’s always a show, but I know viewers will leave seeing something different that they’d like to try!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Simply acknowledge creators. We tend to think of the huge names when we look at creatives, but most have a smaller following. What all creatives do is a form of art. I equate it to going to the busiest street in your town and standing on a pedestal and performing. Many people will walk by and some may stop to pay attention to what it is you have to offer. The key in the mindset of the creative is that they will not stop doing because it is driven by passion, not necessarily the attention that it receives.
To support creatives, share their story and follow their body of work. Give them a like or share their work online if that’s their outlet. But most of all, let creatives know that they are appreciated.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Sometimes it can be hard for non-creatives to understand the space that creatives need. It may be mental space, physical space, or just time to pull back and get prepared to try and do something that hasn’t been done before. A creative is trying to put their mark on something to make it different or show it in another light that others haven’t seen before. This doesn’t have to be done in solitude either. The same thing can happen when working with or leading a group of people. Everyone needs some type of space to let the creative process thrive in order to see a form of success the way they see it.
