We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jackson Wooten a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jackson, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Every day I’m taking a risk. Trying to do something creative as your career is financially stupid – there’s no guarantee of success. There’s no safety net. I struggle to pay my rent. The “check engine” light is my nemesis. I don’t have a savings account.
But I’m fulfilled every day because I spend my time doing what I love. I think that’s pretty cool.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have a cool idea that I heard recently. I think it might be more useful than talking the details of how i got to where I am. The idea is:
curate your brain
What that means is – seek and soak up information and inspiration in your life to influence your art.
It’s something I’ve done as an artist. I think to create great art you need to have something to say. You only get that by living your life – not locking yourself in a room and making art all day.
Anyway if you wanna check out my music, I think it’s rad.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yeah. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I realized that our lives are comically meaningless. But it’s all good! We get to seek our own adventure on this playground called life (just remember to bring a towel)!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
obviously money would be cool, but next would be words of affirmation and encouragements. You don’t have to like someone’s art. but you can like that they love it.
