We were lucky to catch up with Donny J recently and have shared our conversation below.
Donny J, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
One may think they know of the greatest risk to take. Then, they would simplify it by defining “risks” such as skydiving, water-sports, gambling, or even flying in a plane. The biggest risk I’ve identified is taking a risk on YOURSELF.
The greatest risk I’ve ever taken was betting on myself. Risking my free time, sleep, public image, energy, blood, sweat, and tears; All to exemplify my character whilst possessing confidence, poise, bravery, versatility, courage, and being audacious.
I took a risk on following my dream of artistry. I was able to do this by first, following my dream of entrepreneurship… to fund my dream of artistry. I’ve ventured out to find products that are in high demand but low cost, resale them and use the money to pay for studio time. In addition to that, I networked with those who I never thought of sharing my artistry with, under a willing eye. While taking these risks I’ve been able to release my thoughts of insecurity concerning who I am and what I contribute to my music by embellishing my aura into each interaction concerning music. This risk has ultimately opened up many doors, blessings, and learning lessons for me (and is continuing to do so).
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Donny J, a motor city native with a life dedicated to music and education within all realms used to navigate throughout life. I am a Savannah State University Alumnus possessing not one but TWO degrees at the age of 21; A Bachelor’s degree of Business Management and an Associate’s degree of Arts. A well mannered young woman who has no problem taking initiative, ownership, and overcoming obstacles. My Passion for music has stemmed from past engagements throughout my school involvements. Music has been apart of my life since a little girl starting in third grade beginning in orchestra playing the violin for 3 years. I fell into a deep fascination with the trumpet and began playing it in 6th grade. I played the trumpet until 10th grade then i began playing the euphonium within that same year until 12th grade. Amongst all of my involvements throughout high school, I also sung in my church’s choir for four years straight. After receiving a full ride scholarship to Savannah State University, I engaged in extracurricular activities including hosting for our college radio station WSSU. I shared a show “Underground Tigaholics” where my co-host 2benjii and I, would shed light on local artists on campus and provide the opportunity for interviews to broaden their fan base as well as play their songs on our show. I went to a few open mics on campus to support the artists we worked with but that opened my eyes to freestyling. Once I started I couldn’t stop and people loved it. I started taking my talent to recording studios and getting other opinions and praises which has led me to where I am today, Donny J
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative artist (see what i did there ;)) is the mental release and appreciation received for me being transparent concerning my productions. My happiest moments are shared with new fans. When people tell me they like my voice, my message being conveyed or even my style.. it is a great feeling. I make music for all cultures, all professionals, all party goers, even all lifestyles.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is to obtain recognition for my music yes…but ultimately provide a confidence boost for those who feel they are underappreciated, unqualified, overlooked.
