We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yasheika Turner . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yasheika below.
Yasheika , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In 2011 I took a huge risk and migrated to Canada with my 3 year old daughter.
I wanted FREEDOM to create a new life.
I felt stuck and I felt trapped.
I started praying, asking the Lord for direction.
God then answered my prayers and created the way to move to Canada.
I had never been to Canada before and I had no experience of what it would be like living here, anyways I applied and started the process.
A co-worker of mine did the application and she was on the tail end of her application, so she told me about the process and walked me through it. She reassured me not to worry, “I’ll be there before you so when you arrive feel free to live with me until you’re settled.” I did the application. It took around 2 years for the process to be completed.
I went ahead and I sold all my furniture in Jamaica and I migrated with my three-year-old daughter and 4 suitcases. We arrived in Canada in Spring April 2011.
It was a journey, it was a lot of mindset work, I started from the bottom..
And here I am 11 years after experiencing my success journey, the secret sauce to my success journey was to focus on 1 goal at a time.
After landing, My main goal was to pass the RN exam. In Jamaica I was a registered nurse for 7 years, so when I migrated here After doing my transcript assessment the only thing that the CNO wanted was for me to retake the RN exam.. I put all efforts and every energy and every time into studying
I found a survival job as we call it then, because the RN licensing was a process and a long time in between doing your exam and getting the results. I started job searching in the city I was living in, and I did multiple applications with no luck.
I went to another city to stay with a family member, I then applied for a job, during that short visit I was successful in getting a job. I had to relocate to that city for work and send my daughter back home temporarily for 3 months so that i could set the foundation right. That was another devastating thing for me, sending her back home, and getting ready for my next level.
There were some roadblocks along the way. I had to figure out how to maneuver myself.
I furnished my apartment bit-by-bit, one thing at a time,
I was so determined to purchase my house, which I did after 4 years. I met my now husband, my soulmate had another child, and we got married. We sold that house and upgraded to a bigger house, a detached house. Life is grand. I’m in my job THRIVING along.
I started life coaching to help other women on this journey.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
During my migration process The what if moments and the mindset fear started to surfacein my thoughts.
Is this the right move Yasheika?
Should you be doing this?
You have no experience living in Canada?
You have no experience or knowledge of what it would be like, what this transition would be like, what this journey would be like
The First thing was to understand that I was starting life all over, I had to Get out of my comfort zone, this was a new chapter. EVETYTHING was new, new culture, new norms, new values, new climate, new food, new people, new everything. I felt like giving up ans returning home, but I weathered through the tough days.
To avoid feeling discouraged: I Maintained a tunnel vision on my WHY, why was i moving, what does my big vision looks like, I speak it, wrote it out, thought about the end results. This mindset kept me going, and build resilience.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Initially I thought i would be starting over from where i left off in Jamaica, but it was starting all over from the bottom. Creeping before walking like a baby, I had to avoid comparing myself to the AJones who have been here for years, staying in my lane, I had to go at my own speed and keep my eyes on my own journey.
