Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joshua Wheaton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Joshua, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
Yes, I am very happy as business owner. I rarely seriously think about what it would be like to have a regular job because I can remember it enough very well and I see enough people doing what I personally couldn’t do anymore. The last time I seriously thought about it was a low moment in my business and in my mental state. I feel like this will happen with anyone who is new in entreprenurship or business. The challenges that can be faced aren’t anything you’ve ever been through before. The biggest thing that I love about entrepreneurship and being a business owner is that it is literally no limit on how much you can make but one thing I learned from my mentor is that there is also no limit on how much you can not be making for example; your business could literally from 0 to hero and then hero back to 0 and that’s what some people aren’t prepared for or have the expectations that it could never even happen to you. My success in my business was at an all time high and I believed there was no way in the world I could go back down and then BOOM! It happened, at this moment I learned and believe that this is that same moment that your journey truly starts and your character begins to build. At these low moments your self-doubt is at an all time high, your self-pity as well. But your faith and stickability is at the test. Thinking about potentially getting a job made me sick to my stomach simply because of my own personal experiences with jobs and not the belief that there’s no fun or good jobs out there. With my personal experience I worked 3 jobs realistically and 1 for only 3 days so I won’t count it but within those 3 jobs I felt like there was a lid on my potential. I look at myself as a hard working individual and I pride myself on it, so going into those different jobs I had the mindset that my grandfather and father instilled in me was if you’re going to do a job do it to the best of your ability and I did that believing that my work will pay off. Some will say it did or would have if I gave it more time but it’s hard to accept that when you’re outworking everyone around you for months trying to get notice for a raise and being overlooked or taken advantage of to be used to help others. I never had an issue with helping anyone else, I’m a true team player but when you realize they don’t need the help and just being lazy but you both still get the same equal pay it starts to raise alarm and makes you question yourself “why am I working so hard when everyone else chilling and avoiding the work?”. With those thoughts I never wanted to lessen my work ethic to fit my environment I just needed to work in a different environment an environment where I’m in control of what my income and success looks like and whatever work I put in won’t just pay me for the week but can pay me for a lifetime.
Joshua, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For any of the readers who don’t know much about me; I am a 21 year old serial entrepreneur, investor and mentor. The way that I got into the investing entrepreneurship and the industry of influence marketing I knew that I wanted to do something better in my. After graduating high school in 2019 my mother seriously wanted me to attend collage. I knew that that wasn’t the path that I personally wanted to take unless it was completely paid for because of watched and know individuals who went to collage wasn’t focused enough to finish, finished but didn’t even get a job in the field the went to school for or finished and just ended up working for someone. Another reason why I didn’t want to take the college route because simply my family wasn’t the most financially sound family in the bunch and if I went out to school I wouldn’t have been able to focus due to financial needs and also still knowing that my family back home needed help. So the route that I was confident and was excited to take was to start in the carpenters union in a paid apprenticeship program which would have given everyone the chance to be happy. For my mom I would have gotten an associates degree for me and everyone else I would have been making pretty good money with predetermined raises available within the 4 year program. The plan came crashing to the ground when Covid-19 happened because as they told me “there aren’t many jobs available and we have more applicants then jobs” so after testing in and going to two interviews they had me waiting for about 6 months for an update that never came. I then got a job at amazon where I truly realized jobs aren’t for me. So I started researching what it actually took to become a millionaire and I started seeing things like invest, have multiple streams of passive income, have the right mindset and be around the right people. The only thing I did somewhat have was the right mindset, I knew I’d be successful just not when and how. So after that I reached out to someone I played basketball with in high school and he was the only person I knew of that seemed to be on that track and that’s when it all started. I seen a way to educate myself to get further and be more of an asset to others and that is where my business
When it comes down to my business, the products and service that are provided is financially literacy education within whatever specific field you want to get into such as e-commerce/drop shipping, day trading, investing into assets like crypto currency and stocks. The most valuable thing is that you have the ability to learn new skills with direct information instead of all the fluff that you have to go through when looking on the internet and just watching any random person on YouTube trying be looked at as a guru. Alongside of the educational course there are live educators who have the ability to take out the time to help you with better understanding and also have the ability to answer personal questions. So all in all it gives my mentees and business partners a convenient way of learning different skills to generate multiple passive income streams for themselves. The biggest thing that is set apart from others is the community and family energy that is received showing that what we do is more then just business but more of personal developing environment with love, care, support, positivity and fun. Most people can be very successful in what they do but the drive to get it done isn’t always money motivated. Yes we all want money but we all don’t get up and work just because of money, love and positive energy from others can make you more inspired to take action for change then anything in my opinion.
The thing that I am most proud of is my personal growth in skill and mental. In the beginning of my journey I was 100% clueless to the investing world, passive income, online e-commerce stores and all that so I definitely had some beginner worry overthinking whether I would understand but the biggest think that pushed me to understand everything was knowing it was an option, it was mandatory for me to implement new ways of generating income in life. But mentally I went from a mindset of wanting this to work for MY own benefit to take care of MY family and change MY life but now I have reached a point to where I want to get 10x better to be better at helping others. I now want to help others take care of THEIR family, have the chance to better THEIR life and reach all of THEIR goals. That is also the main thing I want potential followers, business partners and mentees to understand is when you’re being led an in an environment full of people who focuses on helping others get better that as an environment you can succeed in but if the “leader” is all about them the only one who can really benefit is them.
How did you build your audience on social media?
The way that I’ve build my audience was first figuring out who I am and what type of marketer could I be. I believe their are 4 different type of marketers, you have: The motivator which is very important because a lot of people *BELIEVE* it’s about being motivated to reach success so you would be someone they would be looking for to get excited to do better or take advantage of what you have to offer. The trainer which is someone who has skills and value to teach so now your audience feel a sense of growth from being plugged into your content. The lifestyle marketer which provides the least amount of value because now you have an audience of people who do one of three things get inspired, feel unaccomplished in their life or become annoyed looking at your lifestyle and not gaining any value to succeed as well. Last but not least the spiritual marketer and this is someone is providing a form of life bettering guidance of self growth and development. So once you figure out what best fits what you can do you start to ask yourself what type of audience are you looking to attract in terms of age, gender, career, location etc. So me I know that I relate very well with young adults and anyone who’s been through financial struggles before so I am a motivator to get people to believe in themselves, a trainer to give them simple to understand knowledge to build their confidence that they can understand the information and a touch of lifestyle to inspire them that if I can you can too but it’s very important if are going to have a balance of multiple types to be consistent with each one so followers do not disengage.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I personally feel in business it’s a good thing to pivot from time to time because each business has it’s seasons and in different seasons a shift in focus maybe needed. My biggest moment were I had to pivot a time everything was going great and then slowly but surely everything started to take a turn and in this moment you go through a time of reflection and my mistake was only focusing on educating individuals on just one side of what my business offers entirely which was investing but even worse focusing on one investing strategy. In a mentorship business you will deal with a bunch of different people with different lifestyles and mindsets and at the time I wasn’t thinking that way. I had the mindset of this works for me this works for them it should work for everybody and that wasn’t the correct way to run things and I’m grateful I went through that major challenge because it taught me a valuable lesson and the pivot that I made was understanding people, their life situation, day to day schedule and their responsibilities to better to see what is the best direction and thing for them to focus on to reach their personal goals.
