We recently connected with Tanisha Judkins and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanisha, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Time management is something I work on every day. Family is so important to me and I want to spend as much time with my husband and kids as much as possible. However, I love what I do and enjoy creating tumblers. Having a family, working a full time job and owning a business is hard work so I have a set schedule that I adhere to each day. It can be challenging but it keeps my days in order.
Before I created my first tumbler, I did a lot of research. I watched numerous tumbler videos on how to use different techniques when glittering and how to properly use epoxy. I use an FDA approved epoxy that gives the tumblers a glass like finish. It’s extremely important to know how to safely use epoxy and to always wear proper PPE. I also joined several mentorship groups which has helped foster my skills and has been instrumental in the growth of my business. Like any successful business, it takes time and patience.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Tanisha and I am the owner and creator of Sip With T’s Tumblers and More, LLC. I create custom epoxy glitter and rhinestone tumblers, ready to ship tumblers as well as other trinkets such as pens, pencils and notebooks.
I currently reside in Virginia with my very supportive husband and two very active boys.
The pandemic was hard on many families including my family. In September of 2020, I gave birth to my second child. During my maternity leave, I was home with both of my boys every day which was wonderful, but I felt the desire to do something different for me. I have always loved anything that sparkles and thought it would be cool to add glitter to different objects. I began to look though YouTube and stumbled upon a few tumbler videos. I had no idea there was a community full of tumbler artists. I researched for a few months on how to safely use epoxy before creating my first tumbler. What started as a hobby turned into a business.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is watching the customers reaction when they see their tumbler for the first time. I absolutely love taking the ideas from customers and creating exactly what they envision.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
In my opinion, in today’s society, I find many individuals who have the mindset of believing that small businesses have less quality products versus department stores or name brand products. I find that most people feel hand made products are overpriced but do not understand the amount of funds and time it takes to create custom products. For example, a potential customer wanted me to create a custom tumbler but at the price she felt comfortable paying, which was below my set price. I explained to her the difference and the process between each tumbler as well as my set price. I also thanked her for her interest in my products and allowing me to educate her on the process of creating a tumbler. Customer service is my top priority.
Society can continue to support small businesses by shopping at local shops and purchasing their products.
