We recently connected with Jonathan Richards and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Jonathan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard.
Sea Salt is the purest and least processed form of salt, obtained naturally from the sea waters. Unlike table salt, they are not iodized and are produced by filtering evaporating the salty water from oceans and lakes. Contrary to popular belief, sea salt is extremely beneficial for our bodies. It helps in keeping us hydrated, and balances our electrolytes. The amount of minerals including magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc, and iron in sea salt also satisfies our thirst for a longer period of time and keeps us holding on to fluids for longer.
Table salt, on the other hand, dehydrates us and actually leeches essential minerals from the body. It also makes us crave salt more because our bodies are in need of nutrients that are found in natural sea salt but cannot be satisfied by processed table salt.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
It all started with our passion for food, and the love of our pristine coastal waters here in Palm Beach. As a Florida Native with a background in the culinary arts, I realized what an important role good salt has in our lives. As an often overlooked ingredient, we aim to bring salt the attention it deserves.
We are a small batch artisanal culinary sea salt company. Began making salt for friends and family and it quickly grew into a passion. Now for the first time we are happy to offer our products to the public. Our goal is to provide the best salt possible. 100% Natural, free of any chemicals, dyes, or anti-caking agents.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
Yes, we do manufacture our sea salt. To do this first we need sea water, which we gather by hand in 5 gallon food safe buckets. Which we transport back to our facility. We then run it though a three stage filter process that filters all the way down to 1 micron. A human hair is about 70 Microns to give you an idea of how fine a filter that is. This helps insure that we are serving our customers the cleanest and purest salt possible, free of any micro plastics or other contaminates. The water is then transferred to our boil pots where we reduce the amount of water, during this process we remove amounts of calcium and potassium which can affect the oceanic briny, clean slightly sweet taste of our salts. Once we reach the perfect salinity we the transfer our brine solution to open evaporation pans. This step in the process can take any where from a few days to 2 weeks depending on temperature and humidity. The salt gathers like snowflakes on the waters surface and when they get heavy enough they fall to the bottom of the pans waiting to be scooped by hand and dried. Every salt crystal is then sorted for size and inspected by hand before being packaged, by hand as well. It is a labor intensive and time consuming process but one that i have absolutely grown to love, and believe gives our customers the very best salt available.
