Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Taurean Cavins-Flores. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Taurean, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My parents divorced when I was five years old. At that age, a child doesn’t really know what is happening, let alone the reasons behind it. All I knew was that my mother and father were mad at each other and we weren’t going to be living together anymore. I was devastated; I had branded us as “A three family” and even though they were divorcing, I could still feel an overwhelming shared love between us. Unfortunately, that isn’t always enough to keep two people together. Bouncing from house to house, I found my safe place within movies. I would watch anything I could and probably a lot that I shouldn’t have (given that I had the cool divorced dad now) to stimulate my imagination and take me away from the hurt I was feeling. I knew I wanted to pursue acting as my career from the age of five and since that time, nothing has changed in terms of my want to act. What has changed, however, is my purpose for doing it. I’ve realized that acting may have very literally saved my life and my purpose in life has become to give people, no matter their age, the same solace I needed as a child. Not only have I become a professional actor, but also an acting teacher and it’s an incredible feeling that every day I’m fulfilling my purpose on this earth. I am thankful every day.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I majored in theatre in college, attended the National Theatre Conservatory, and attended Playhouse West for six years in L.A. This education has supplied me with a wealth of knowledge to share on set, on stage, and with my students and clients. I teach the Meisner Technique at Drama Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia and also provide self tape and coaching services for actors. I can both help you break down a script for an audition and put you on tape for said audition while providing you the unique insight as a teacher and fellow actor. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I’m not solely an actor or solely a teacher, but both. And these two disciplines fuel each other, providing an expansive wealth of knowledge that will never dry up or become stale.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission as an actor and acting teacher is to provide people with the life saving experience it gave me when I needed it most.
Have you ever had to pivot?
There were some tough times I had to face as an actor. The biggest being the fact that I had to survive when acting wasn’t providing the financial support I needed. I had to make some compromises that included getting a “day job” and I did what I had to do, but the balance between necessity and passion was off. I made the pivot to survive, but I can’t stress enough to anyone reading this that it is imperative you check in often with yourself throughout your creative journey so as not to lose sight of your passion.
