We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittani Wingate a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brittani, thanks for joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hold a burden for the next generation. We live in a world where everything is fast paced, and children are quickly taking in information via social media and the internet that is cultivating how they believe and what they want to do in life. There are many children that desire to be famous for the arts, while other career choices are going unseen. I create digital artwork for children’s books and have created my own book “Big Plan, Little Man ” that educates children on the many ventures in life they can follow that will lead to success. The desire of becoming a doctor, lawyer, and teacher are now falling the the side of hopes of becoming viral. My mission is to help children cultivate their gifts by providing options and exposure to the limitless career choices in life.

Brittani, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Brittani Wingate, I am a freelance Graphic Designer and have helped many small businesses and non-profits by creating digital content, brand packaging and illustrations. I started my business in 2019 having only an iPad, previous art skills, and learning software from small online courses. Currently, I’ve grown in my learning of design, worked freelance for many successful businesses, designed book covers and created illustrations for authors, while being in school to complete my B.F. A in Graphic Design. What sets me apart from other designers is my background in art and hand drawing skills that was cultivated since childhood. While other designers use pre-existing codes and media data., my work of art is authentic providing my clients with a true artistic experience. I am most proud of the creation of my first children’s book entitled “Big Plan, Little Man.” I am proud of the work I’ve done for others, but this book is personal because every aspect of this book I created myself. I wrote the narrative, illustrated the characters, and this project is one I can call my own. It was inspired by my 8 year old son, Alex who has a vivid imagination, and the book is dedicated to children that inspire to be so much more than what’s around them. As parents, it’s our job to find the hidden talents and gems within our kids and to help them achieve without limitations.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative?
They say “Art is undefined.” I find this to be true even within my business. No two clients of mine has been the same and every one likes and desires something different. My job to come up with concepts and designs to fit the style and personality of each business. It’s almost as if I’m a Chameleon. One project maybe conservative, while the other could be very eclectic. The best part of being an artist is finding that sweet spot where you can balance both ends of the spectrum.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The challenge of being a self taught artist is having an eye for what looks good and doesn’t. However, as I started formal education, I realized having an eye is one just aspect. a true graphic designer understands, structure, balance, and the study behind the art itself. These are skills I had to learn in school. Looking back when I first started, it’s a lot of things I didn’t know and realized I could’ve done a-lot better with formal training.
