Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jessica Serna. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jessica, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
MyCurlyAdventures is a Texas based travel brand that inspires people to find magic in the everyday and encourages people to live a travel lifestyle even with a 9-5 through looking for local getaways. We take readers on adventures throughout the state and beyond with my husband and showcasing how sometimes you can “travel the world” without having to travel far. Through these trips, we share married life, managing curly hair, and the excitement of making every moment magical. We have loved sharing our passion for travel and adventure to everyone willing to go out of thier comfort zone. We have published a magazine to share these adventures and also travels across Texas to speak about travel on local TV.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After I graduated college I really wanted to travel around the world. However I ended up getting a job with a 9-to-5 and usually can’t do much Jetsetting around the world when you only have weekends off in two weeks of PTO. Instead of feeling discouraged by my situation I decided to look around me and see what treasures I could find in my own backyard. Turns out there’s so much to do in taxes for just a week and get away. I would go Sandsurfing in Monahans, visit the wine country of Fredericksburg, visit English gardens in Weatherford, and so much more. I was amazed at all that we had and the chips that I could take and come back on Monday to feel rejuvenated for work.
Like most people my age I would post about it on Instagram with pictures and share about what we were doing. Soon people started asking us about the trips that we were taking and how we are finding so much time to explore. Many people are amazed that all of this was right here in taxes. At one point a brand reached out for a sponsored post and although I was not familiar with it I decided to try it. From there I learned that I could have a great side hustle of traveling on the weekends and then going to work at the job that I love during the week.
Before we knew it our Instagram page was taking off and we were learning all about the blogging world. It came to a point where I had to decide whether I wanted to continue on this path or pursue the career that I had. I ended up making the leap and going full-time and haven’t looked back since.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
For me the biggest thing is knowing that we’re serving in need. Before this there weren’t as many resources and inspiration to travel locally. Now traveling in your backyard has been such a big thing in our state and I’m glad I could be a part of that growth. I get excited every day to discover new things that might inspire someone to go outside and support a local business and show off what is around us.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I believe there is power in niching down. Because there weren’t other people talking about what I was talking about. It was serving a need that people were looking for. Because of that my content encouraged people to share with their friends, for instance sending it to someone and saying I can’t believe this is here. Or someone might look at a spot in Texas and send it to their friends so that they could go on that trip. Additionally, when people were looking for things to do I became the top of mind expert for people who were moving to the area.
It took a while to establish that expertise and make myself the go to person but after enough content and not working with enough people and shi the resources it took off.
