We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Amanda Jacobs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Amanda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I learned how to sew at a very early age. I have an aunt that is an extremely creative individual and she taught me how to use the sewing machine and guided me in understanding the craft. As I grew up I began to re-design and alter my clothing to fit my personal style. I was very passionate about cultivating my own style and always felt that finding really great items and making them unique and different was something I was meant to do. Knowing now that my passion for this just became larger and more intense I would have looked for more opportunities to learn from other creative people around me.
Skills that I believe are essential to my craft would be for sure an understanding of the sewing machine and how to interpret patterns. An eye for items that have great structure and foundation so that they are best suited for re-design is helpful as well and I contribute that to my many years in the high end retail industry. I also believe that having tough skin is a great skill and it is one that is build up over time and takes previous experiences to strengthen the connection you have with yourself and your creative vision.
Obstacles that stood in my way of learning more were not really obstacles more like small challenges that needed a bit more time to overcome and potentially a different view point to help solve. Starting a family for example, I have created 3 beautiful humans, and although at times priorities shift and time for yourself might be limited, I always kept my passion in the forefront as it is a lot of who I am and what keeps me going.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a sustainable fashion designer. I take ethically sourced garments and accessories and re-design them into one of a kind works of art. I have Degree in Textiles, Apparel & Merchandising as well as an extensive background working in high end retail.
I thrive on finding items that have great foundation and solid potential to become something else. I feel that sustainable fashion is something that should be focused on more in the industry. The amount of clothing and textile waste is causing an extreme effect on our planet and our people.
I love creating one of a kind garments for individuals so that they can feel and look amazing. Re-designing garments and creating unique clothing for people that are just as special and unique is something that I am most proud of. One of my favorite things to create is a custom design for a client because I get to understand them and who they are and come up with something exceptional that captures their essence or vibe perfectly. It easily becomes something in their closet that they will covet and love forever!
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to not only provide sustainable and highly fashionable clothing but to also educate people as to why this is a best way to cultivate and cherish your unique style.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the unexpected creative process. Sometimes I will be creating a piece and then cut something or move fabric somewhere and then BOOM I now have the direction of where I want to take the garment. I didn’t expect it to happen but when it did, everything made sense.
