We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Charlotte Elizabeth. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Charlotte below.
Charlotte, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I’ve been acting and drawing since I was 10, I started getting into portraits around 12 and realised I had an eye for detail. I was raised in an environment that appreciated the arts but never took it seriously as a career path. I felt pretty hopeful about turning my creative abilities into a career but I definitely was affected by the doubts of others. When I graduated high school I jumped right into the service industry full time and I thought that was how I could save up money to start doing what I love. But after years of feeling completely depleted, giving my all to a job that didn’t matter to me, I finally left for a creative job and that started getting things rolling in my brain. That job was fixing other people’s artwork which was enjoyable for a while but I was still neglecting my need to act and produce my own artwork. I would go home and have no energy for myself. What kicked me into gear was my dear friend passing away at the end of last year. He always took risks and we can all say he lived life to the fullest, but I couldn’t say the same about myself. In June I left my job and became a full time artist. So far I’ve been running a successful commission based art business while having flexibility to audition for acting jobs and do improv shows weekly. It’s a lot of work, sometimes I wish I had done this sooner, but I’m just grateful to be in this position now.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Charlotte, I am a 25 year old full time artist, actor, and improv comedian. I make most of my income from art commissions-I do murals, painted jackets, portraits, and occasionally landscapes and abstract artwork. I like to experiment with mediums but I mostly use acrylic, oil paint, and digital. I felt a need to stay productive from a young age and drawing felt like a comforting way to do that. Acting was a huge blessing in my life around the same age too, I immediately knew I’d pursue it for the rest of my life. People used to tell me to pick one and I’m so glad I never listened, I love being able to switch between skills and try new things every chance I get!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
I was so anxious to pursue a creative path because I was afraid to fail, I think a great part of going on my own has been the freedom and flexibility of making my own hours and taking breaks when I need them. The best part has been the encouragement and support I’ve recieved, I felt so alone and discouraged until I pushed myself to just trust my abilities, and my community has noticed and stepped in to support me in whatever ways; commissions, spreading the word or even just saying “I love what you’re doing, keep going!”

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I would love to one day be able to support other creatives in ways I would’ve benefited from. I can share any opportunities I find with others, but eventually being able to financially support someone just starting out and connecting them to job opportunities would be cool.
