We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Brittany Campbell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Brittany below.
Alright, Brittany thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission for Strengthening Transformations Inc. comes courtesy of the life that God gave to me and the trials and tribulations that came along with it. When I was seventeen I was blessed with the life changing responsibility of becoming the mother of my “Sonshine, ’’ Caleb. My life began that day, everything I have achieved and continue to accomplish is motivated by him. Being a teen mother opened my eyes to so many situations that women and girls like myself went through on a daily basis. I quickly learned that in my community, there weren’t many opportunities for “life” assistance that I needed when facing certain challenges, so I decided to be apart of the solution. I’ve had several monumental events occur in my life surrounding substance abuse, domestic violence, and even a close call with death that resulted in the murder of an ex-boyfriend. But, I’ve always had my faith to rely and lean on. My faith in God is what has kept me. With all I have experienced and witnessed, I knew that I wanted to help women and girls that struggled with similar obstacles. So, that’s how I came about with the idea to start my nonprofit organization Strengthening Transformations Inc., focusing on women and girls with the belief, that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Brittany Campbell was a woman that was put on this earth to not be ordinary but extraordinary and leave a little bit of glitter wherever I go, with a smile that will light up a whole room. And a heart of gold and that of a giver to match.
My giving mentality is one of my reasons I got into the nonprofit business as well as due to life experiences and wanting to use my pain for purpose and fulfill my God given purpose, that He assigned specifically for me and only me. Without the circumstances I’ve been through, I would not have had the experiences to make me the woman I have grown to be and still growing into til this very day. My life trials is what have built my testimony, which I feel is meant to be shared with other women and girls going through the same or similar situations. You never know how your story can be a help or inspiration to the next women or girl. I am a survivor and an overcomer! There have been several people I’ve met over the years that have counted me out and doubted me, but continue to be proven wrong from the way God shows up and out and over my life!
Strengthening Transformations Inc., is an organization that advocates, mentors, and educates women (ages 18-24) and girls (ages 12-17) through workshops and community partnerships. We believe that empowerment is the key to breaking negative generational cycles and strengthening foundations. We are firm believers in transforming adversities into strengths! The annual events that my organization is most known for in our communities are The Annual Father Daughter Dance, Friendship Fest, Patricia’s Hearts To Heal Trauma Recovery Retreat, and Kristara’s Day.
What sets me apart from others first and foremost is that I am a God-fearing woman, servant leader, that is confident, determined, and leaves a mark on any and everyone that I come in contact with. I also am a nature leader, doer, and visionary and I get things done and start legacies for myself and others, such as my Aunt Patricia and childhood friend Kristara. I am also a go-getter that went from a victim to a victor. I am extremely community and service oriented, dedicated to seeing women win!
What I am most proud of is my faith, and fulfilling my purpose and doing the work God has for me. As well as being a mother to my SonShine, and also being the Founder of Strengthening Transformations Inc.
The main things that I want people to know about me is that I have a lot of anchors in my life. Including my relationship with God which is what guides and keeps me. I know my faith is something that I can ALWAYS rely on and will constantly motivate me. My family and friends are another one, especially my SonShine, Caleb, because they keep me grounded and focused. My family are always there, and love me unconditionally through all my flaws, because they know that my heart is pure. They are always there by my side which is appreciated, and I am forever grateful! A special thank you to all of them because without them I would not be where I am today nor would the organization. And without the circumstances I’ve been through, I wouldn’t have the experiences to make me the woman I have grown to be and still am growing into. I am a survivor and an overcomer!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
On April 4, 2011 I was in a near death experience that took the life of my ex, who had physically and verbally abused me during our relationship. He was assassinated right in front of me and I was told it was a miracle that I even survived without any harm being done to me given the circumstances. After his death and this near death experience for myself it put me in a dark space of deep depression that I just knew I was never going to come through. But my faith in God is what kept me and made me realize He let me survive that situation for a reason—to be a help and a blessing to others. At that point He made me realize that I am a servant leader and its my God given purpose to exhibit that in any and every way that I can until my time here on earth is done. God makes no mistakes and He helped me turn my pain into purpose and become a victor and not a victim! With all I have experienced and witnessed, I knew that I wanted to help women and girls that struggled with similar obstacles because there were plenty more Brittany’s out there. So, I started my nonprofit organization Strengthening Transformations Inc., to be honest, I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for God’s grace and mercy. I give God ALL the credit, and ALL the thanks for the purpose over my life, and the plans to do great things in the lives of others! In my situation the only option was up and to be resilient in the utmost respect!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn in life is that vulnerability is a sign of weakness. In my healing journey I have learn that vulnerability is actually a sign of strength and it takes a lot of courage. By healing myself by going to therapy, reading books, and educating myself in other ways has helped me completely to this conclusion. It is easy to be guarded and push people away. But it takes a certain amount of courage and strength to let yourself be vulnerable especially if that is all you know. And for my whole life I have been a guarded individual, because I was taught to do so as a defense mechanism so I wouldn’t get hurt. But how can you truly heal, if you don’t incorporate the vulnerability aspect, that’s just it you can’t. So once I realized that it was not a weakness and is actually a necessity I got so much farther in my healing journey and I still am in to this very day. One day I was watching a YouTube video of one of Brene Brown’s speeches and something that she said stook out to me and I always refer back to it and it’s that, “Vulnerability is not weakness, it’s our most accurate measure of courage, “ and she couldn’t have been more right.
