Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Awa N. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Awa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Storytelling has always been at the core of what I do, and it influences everything I create from design work made to represent a brand’s identity to the artwork I draw made to represent people (especially black women) who’ve only ever had one side of their story told, or none. I draw black women being soft, being taken care of, being at peace, because those are the stories we deserve and that unfortunately, too often, our realities don’t allow us to have.

Awa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Multimedia Designer as well as an Illustrator. I’ve done visual work in a lot of different fields with a lot of different techniques, from your typical logo, to murals, animation and of course illustrations, mainly digital ones. I pride myself on being able to work with different mediums to bring clients’ vision to life but also on having the ability to ask the right questions to polish said vision. In terms of my work outside of commissions or contracts, I sell art prints of my own original art.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Social media, hands down. Of course there are always referrals and those tend to bring in clients that are already a bit more sure of what they want from me, but social media has helped me reach people that I would never meet in a typical networking event. My first client came from social media, and almost every other client has come from there as well, especially since all of the work I do is online.

Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
I keep track of all of my orders as well as the clients names, and I rarely forget anybody who’s ordered from me even if it was just once. All my orders include handwritten note and I communicate with my clients and give them updates should that be needed, then for the ones that are true “regulars”, their notes are a little longer, sometimes their orders include freebies and I will occasionally message them simple thank you’s. I think it is all about appreciating the fact that my business could not exist without them, and letting them know that I am aware of that and thankful for them. Simple words of appreciation go a lot further than automated, unpersonalized messages, even if they take a little more time.
