We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Christopher Broom. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Christopher below.
Christopher, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Has your work ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized?
Yes, I feel that I have been misunderstood and mischaracterized in my field of work. As a pastor, I love to have fun, enjoy life, and change lives in the process. I have never been one to do things traditionally or normally. I have always pushed the proverbial “needle” forward and challenged the status quo of doing things.
Most pastors have a “voice” they put on when they speak or when they’re in public, I don’t. Many feel like they have to play a role to fit their denomination(s) or to fit other people’s perceptions and expectations of of being a pastor. I do me. One of the ways I reach people is through my social media.
I have been heavily misunderstood by quite a few traditional Christians who think a pastor should only post scriptures, sermons, or gospel songs to reach those who desire a more fulfilling life. I don’t operate like that. I use comedy, make fun of my marriage, post short motivational videos of my work, poke fun of myself and my kids, and try to show people that being a pastor is no different than being a school teacher, principal, or cashier, for example.
Here’s the greatest thing I’ve learned, one will most likely be misunderstood by those they are close to because they think they know you and they think they know how you should present yourself. However, no matter how misunderstood I am, I follow the plan that I know God has given me as I am led to reach a generation of young and old alike who want to reimagine the work they do in their respective fields.
Christopher, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Christopher Broom. I am a father of three girls, and I’ve been married for eleven years to my wife Monica. I am a pastor, gospel preacher, motivational speaker, a mentor to many young people, an author and business owner. I got into being a preacher and pastor because God called me to tell the Good News of freedom, love, Justice, peace, and truth to God’s people.
As a man who grew up without a father, saw my sister beat when I was five, and saw family members imprisoned, I wanted to make it my business to not become what my environment told me I had to become. I wanted to overcome those obstacles by discovering God’s plan(s) for my life. In doing so, I wanted to uplift and empower other young men and women to discover their worth and God’s plan for themselves to be what God created them to be.
As a mentor, I help young men create visions for themselves to avoid prison, drugs, gangs, the trappings of getting involved sexually prematurely, and much more.
As a pastor, I lead an amazing church called Morning Grove Missionary Baptist Church. I call it the “Place of Rebirth” because as a pastor, I want to restore hope to those who feel like God doesn’t love them, or that they have no reason to live. I want them to know the power of “rebirth” through the power of redefining who they envision themselves to be tho right God eyes.
I am also an author. I was inspired to write my book, “Dream Big, Think Big, and Act Big,” because I wanted to put pen to paper on how God blessed me from being a 19yr old high school dropout to being one who has a master’s degree. I wanted to put pen to paper to let the world know that if you saw your loved one beat, you don’t have to duplicate that behavior. I wanted to put pen to paper to let people know that if your parents ran out on you, you don’t have to run out on your kids.
I am most proud of being a father, husband, and one who dares to be what God has called “him” to be.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Yes, there is something I think non-creatives struggle/will struggle understand about my journey.
They need to know that everything is intentional about me. Every post I make and every word spoken has a reason behind it.For example, it wasn’t until I started poking fun of my marriage that couples started to reach out to me about counseling. I have counseled over fifty couples among countless others because I was intentional about using my marriage as a piñata.
Many super religious individuals did not understand me and they still don’t, but that’s ok. I know the work that God has done and the marriages saved because of it. Just because people don’t know about the results, doesn’t mean they are not there. Keep doing what God has shown you. It’s not for other people to see what God put in your “eyes.”
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
As a pastor, I hold this position because I had the courage to pivot from one terrible situation in 2021 to another in my life. The greatest thing one can do for themselves is to leave any situation that’s against the core of who you are. The moment one learns that misplaced loyalty can lead to missed places of promise, the sooner they will develop the strength to make the pivot for the better in their life.
Whatever you’re dealing with in your life, wether it be marriage, work, business, family, etc., never be afraid to make the necessary steps to follow your heart. Sometimes, God closes the door in a situation so He can open the portal to a new one!
