We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Deadra Wright. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Deadra below.
Deadra , appreciate you joining us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I’ve always grown up in a loving and supportive household. It was quite natural to have the support of my immediate family when I decided to take the journey of baking from home. I also truly believe every path we go on in life is a journey and sometimes certain family and friends aren’t meant to be on that journey with you. It’s not always meant to be taken personal. When people are meant to go on a path with it will happen organically. You’ll never have to ask for support because they’ll automatically support. Our journey is sometimes meant for people we don’t know. We never know how we can impact the people we don’t know and that watch us faithfully whether it’s through social media platform, in person, etc.
Deadra , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Deadra Wright I am a 35 year old mom, wife & home baker/treat maker. I began this journey back in 2019. I was facing health issues that kept me in and out of work constantly. I was a phlebotomist for many years. I began to feel stagnant and not happy at all with what I was doing. When my health started to cause many issues with me working my 9 to 5 it was only natural that I begin to tap into what I love which is cooking and baking. I started with just allergy friendly treats because my daughter has tons of food allergies and it was hard for her to get a delicious treat from the store. It went from allergy friendly treats to regular treats and before I knew it I was having constant customers ordering. I provide a variety of treats from cupcakes to chocolate covered strawberries, pretzels, oreos and more for many occasions. I’ve done weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, etc. I take the stress away from my customers and they know when they order from D’s Treats & More that your treats will not only taste delicious but the presentation will be amazing as well and always made and felt with love. What sets me apart from others is that I go with my own flow. I never follow trends. Trends come and go but if you just be you and do what makes you happy you’ll never go wrong. I’d have to say I’m most proud of my strength. It hasn’t been an easy journey but then again life isn’t easy. I pray, trust God and follow what’s for me. There’s so many days I have rethought what it is that I do but I never give those thoughts power. I wake up and keep pushing. I want my potential customers to know that when you support D’s Treats & More you’re not just supporting a brand but you’re supporting a gift that God has put inside of me and every time I use that gift he’s shining in and through me and using me to inspire, uplift and encourage somebody else to tap into the gifts that God has placed on the inside of you.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
How I built my audience on social media is literally just to start. I know it sounds cliche but there’s no other way. I would literally just bake treats and I made a page whether on Facebook or Instagram and I would just post. Consistency is key. The more you post the more customers you attract. Ask people to share your post that also helped me as well
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A story that illustrates my resilience would be back in 2017 I started to deal with a lot of fatigue issues that caused depression and anxiety. I literally was in and out of work at my 9 to 5 because of it. I was eventually let go of aand I began to feel as though I would never work again because my health issues wouldn’t allow me to. I began to pray and tap into what I love to do which is baking and cooking and it was in that moment that I realized I had to step out on faith. My health may not work for a 9 to 5 but working for myself if any moment my fatigue doesn’t allow me to get out of bed I don’t have to call out, use sick time or fmla I can just choose to not work. It absolutely works for me!
