Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jamie Tatreau. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jamie, appreciate you joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I have always considered myself a “product junkie”… so naturally I thought it would be fun to make my own skincare line. I started playing around in my kitchen making body butters, scrubs and massage candles to use on my clients. Soon my family and friends started trying my goodies. Little by little this hobby began to evolve into a tiny little business. I found that it brought me a lot of joy and it was a wonderful creative outlet.
Once I decided to seriously dive into this venture, Sweet Mana was officially born. I had never taken a business course, so the idea of building one seemed a little daunting. I had to learn all the aspects of setting up a business and developing a brand. I filed all the paperwork to set up a corporation, opened a business bank account, filed a trademark, designed a logo, researched distributors, sourced ingredients, priced out packaging, designed labels and set up a website. It was a big undertaking but I was compelled to do it. It was a new calling.
Over the years, the business has grown so much and I continue to learn and evolve. From product development, advertising, order fulfillment, social media marketing, wholesaling, Customs & International Duties paperwork, attending markets/trade shows to overall scaling the business… it has been a wonderful journey, with many ups and downs along the way.
Jamie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
With 22+ years of experience in the spa industry, I pour a wealth of knowledge into my product line. As a practicing massage therapist, esthetician, skincare manufacturer and retail vendor, I have a diverse view of the industry. I have tried and used many skincare brands over the years. I am passionate about using sustainable plant powered ingredients. I am currently working towards a Master’s Diploma in Herbalism, so I can further infuse plant healing magic into my recipes. I believe in clean, natural skincare that is effective and affordable.
Sweet Mana came into being, as a way to channel my deep love and spiritual connection to the Hawaiian islands. The concepts of “aloha spirit” and the energetics of “mana” influence everything I do and goes into everything I make. Sweet Mana is rooted in the idea of respecting the inter-connectedness and delicate dance of all living things, including Mother Nature. In beauty and spirit, we can live and share aloha.
Sweet Mana’s vision is to promote daily self-care practices & healthy skincare rituals that awaken the senses and elevate well-being. Our products are mindfully crafted with plant powered healing ingredients that are beneficial for the skin, spirit and the planet. It’s our mission to empower others to radiant health, beauty and positivity from the inside out.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
When Covid hit, I (like many other business owners) needed to reevaluate my business structure and make some adjustments. I quickly realized that I was relying on markets, festivals and trade shows for nearly 80% of my business revenue. I absolutely love doing these events and appreciate the face to face interaction with customers, so this is where I put most of my focus. But my business took a huge hit, when all events were suddenly cancelled for two years,. It really showed me that I needed to invest more of my efforts to expand Sweet Mana’s online presence and drive online and wholesale revenues. In hindsight, the greatest lesson that came from Covid was realizing I needed to diversify Sweet Mana’s revenue stream and reduce vulnerability for future uncertainties.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I worked my “day job” for eight years while running the business. I used my personal savings to fund Sweet Mana’s start up and working capitol. Thankfully, I didn’t have to rely on the business to cover my personal expenses, which took a Iot of pressure off. I was able to put all the business revenue back into the business and gradually grow it by buying more equipment, purchasing bulk materials etc.
