We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Linsi Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Linsi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I believe that timing is crucial when starting a business and the opportunity presented itself when I was ready to take the leap. That being said, I would not have chosen any other time to have started then when I did. For me, it was more about being emotionally prepared. Fear and lack of confidence held me back from starting my business earlier. I feared that I wasn’t skilled enough, that I didn’t have the proper equipment, and that I didn’t know enough about business to start one of my own. The list goes on and on. I made every excuse in the book as to why I wasn’t good enough or ready to go out on my own, until I realized that no one has everything together or all of the answers when starting a business. Letting go of my fear and self doubt allowed me the freedom to pursue my dreams of becoming a business owner.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Linsi Taylor and I am a fashion, fine art, and portrait photographer based in South Florida. Ever since I can remember I have loved creating and being artistic. Whether it was painting, drawing, sculpture, or dancing, I loved immersing myself in the artistic processes and in the limitless ability to create. As I got older, it seemed only natural that I would pursue a career in the visual arts. I started doing photography about 12 years ago when I took a beginners black and white film class in art college. I instantly fell in love with the medium and my passion for photography was ignited. Today, I provide luxury portrait photography to women and their loved ones. My clients are given a celebrity like photo shoot experience, complete with a team dedicated to making them look and feel beautiful with magazine style photos. Each portrait session is tailored made for my clients. I provide professional hair, makeup, a studio wardrobe, and a fully guided photo shoot designed to feel comfortable and fun. The purpose of my portrait sessions are to highlight a women’s beauty and strength. My goal is to empower women and to show them that they are worthy of being pampered and feeling beautiful, not 10 years or 10 pounds ago, but right now.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the way you can emotionally and intellectually affect someone. As an artist, you have the capacity to make people think and feel, which is so powerful. You can deepen or change a perspective, open awareness, create feeling of nostalgia, inspire, and heal.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me is word of mouth referrals. I think word of mouth referrals are so important in the photography industry because potential clients want to know that they can feel comfortable, beautiful, and have fun while doing something where they have to be vulnerable. Knowing the photographer will be there to guide them through each step puts some of their fears at ease. Having new clients from word of mouth referrals says a lot about what you are doing and how well you are connecting with your clientele.
