We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tim Buono a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tim, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My parents took me to my first concert in September 2004, I was 9 years old and it was at a campground a few towns away. I remember the artist coming out on stage wearing a white cowboy hat and I got lost in the music and the twangy sound of the guitar he was playing. The artist was Brad Paisley, and it was at that first concert that I knew someday I wanted to be up there having as much fun performing for people as he was. Full circle moment, 17 years later (almost to the day!) in September 2021 I got to play that same stage with my band, with my parents in the crowd, living that moment that I dreamed of at 9 years old. It was a moment I’ll never forget.
Tim, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an independent country music artist based out of New England. I am fortunate enough to get to play many shows around the area, write songs with so many different artists and writers, and meet and make connections with people from all over. My mentality when it comes to my music, my brand, and my shows is that I am the same person on and off the stage. The boots and baseball hat I wear on stage are the same boots and baseball hat I will wear doing yard work around the house. I don’t try to be anyone that I’m not or have a different persona on stage than I do in real life. I have always felt a connection with artists who really seem to be authentic and I have taken my cues from them. I recently got to play a show opening for Lonestar, playing for a theater of roughly 1000 people. I talked to the crowd and told them real-life stories about each song of mine that I played and many people came up to me after the show and were extremely kind, telling me they felt the connection to my songs and my stories. Things like that mean the world to me.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is hearing people sing your songs back to you. That sounds so cliche but as a songwriter, it is truly an amazing feeling hearing someone sing a song that literally just started as an idea in your head. It’s also pretty powerful when someone tells you what a song of yours means to them. I have been fortunate enough to have had that happen a few times with fans and it truly means so much.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission is to stay authentic as an artist. My parents raised myself and my siblings to always be authentic, work hard for the things we want in life, be humble when our hard work is rewarded, and treat other people the way we would want to be treated. I have tried to live by that. I always say that yes, I’m a country music artist, but I am a fan of country music first, and as a fan, I always connected with the artists that were more authentic, humble, and down to earth. That is my mission to always live by that.
