We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Yolanda Campbell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Yolanda below.
Yolanda, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I believe that when you come to SheCuts Barber Studio I provide more than just hair services, my clients receive a total zen experience from the moment they come through the door they will walk into a clean, friendly, welcoming atmosphere with the smell of scented candles burning and the sounds of a musical playlist that’s stellar. . Since the pandemic we all have become more concerned about being around multiple people. At SheCuts Barber Studio it’s appointment only which allows for a more control environment. My clients are able to exhale and relax for the time that they’re receiving there service. I believe that if you provide a great service in a great environment for the clients you have and for the ones you don’t… eventually, they will find out about you. One of my mottos is Be More, Do More, Have More. I don’t wish for the things that I do to be easy but for me to be better…. It’s apples and oranges of what people believe to be “a standard “ but for me the above is what I deem to be above standard.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am originally from Long Island, NY. I currently live in Georgia and own SheCuts Barber Studio in Midtown Atlanta. I’ve been in the hair industry for over 25 years. I started out working in my godmothers shop shampooing part-time after school when I was in college. I finished with my associates degree and asked my mother if I could take a break before pursuing my BA degree, I wanted to get my cosmetology license, she agreed and I did get my license. I’ve been in the hair industry ever since. I worked for Dudley’s which is a hair company located in NC that offered advanced classes for cosmetologists. I taught their clipper metrics class for a few years, which is where I developed my love for cutting all hair textures. Cutting with clippers just seemed to come easy, it just may be in my blood my grandfathers sister was actually a barber.😊
I think that as a barber/hairstylist I have a unique opportunity to encourage & uplift the people who sit in my chair, I work at the crown of peoples head on a daily basis for 30mins and more which allows me to pray over them, have meaningful conversation to motivate and speak words of life. I don’t know what your faith may be but for me I’m a believer and I feel that God has not only blessed me with a talent to cut hair but to also be a blessing with his word. These past 2yrs. have been a real test of faith for us all. I have had so many people to share with me how they have been going through with bouts of depression etc. people need encouragement and to know that “ Its not what you go through, But it’s the spirit in which you go through it with.” I am “We Are” our brothers and Sisters keeper. There is a Hair Salon and Barbershop on every other corner with talented men and women. I want to give people more than a great hair service, I want them to feel something different about my shop the moment they walk through the door and when they leave not only looking better but feeling better. . I want to provide a great service for the clients I have and for the ones that I don’t…. Eventually, they will hear about me.. I don’t wish for things to be easy but for me to be better. . I desire to be successful in what I do, not for the money but for the person that I am becoming.“ Be More, Do More, Have More”. One of the things that I learned at Dudley’s was from Napoleon Hill’s book think and grow Rich “If It’s to Be, It’s up to Me”. A good Attitude changes the Atmosphere. These are some of my thoughts, These are some of the things that I live and stand by, this Is my Brand!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I would say that consistency is the key to building any business. Whether you provide a service or a product. For me being consistent with the quality and detail that I put into my work and honoring time. The majority of my clientele has been built on word of mouth. When people are happy with your service they will happily share your information with others. Work to give that same impeccable service over and over again and you will create a great reputation.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
For me, it was all God’s Favor. I have the best clients anyone could ever ask for. When the opportunity came for me to open my shop this applies for both times. The first time I was already in a shop and the owner passed away and I was able to take over the shop as owner and I needed additional capital for renovations. I did the math and sent a letter to 10 of my clients requesting a specific amount or whatever they were able to give, the response was unbelievable. .. I had to close that shop over 3 years ago due to the building being sold….. A 1 1/2 ago another opportunity was presented to me to open up another shop 2 blocks away from my previous shop, this time it was more challenging due to Covid-19 and this space was a total build out. Once again I went to my clients for assistance and again they responded with such generosity and love. I did not have to take out any loans. When people like you and believe in you, when you consistently offer great service, your clients will in invest in you and your dreams.
