We recently connected with Briana Campbell and have shared our conversation below.
Briana, appreciate you joining us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
One of the craziest things that has happened to me just so happens to be one of the funniest moments. The incident happened just in the very beginning phases of me starting my business back in 2010. As many people who have been following my company for some time know, I originally started creating skincare for my son. He was 4 yrs. old at the time when I first starting experimenting in our small 2-bdr apartment’s kitchen. In the beginning I did not know much about ingredients and whether they were truly natural or synthetically produced. The first product that I ever made was a whipped body butter. I ordered the shea butter and almond oil from Ebay (back then Ebay was the go-to for everything). I also ordered “green tea” essential oil from some random manufacturer that I had done a google search on. For reference, there is no such thing as green tea essential oil. There however is green tea fragrance oil which is synthetic.
So all of the ingredients arrive and now I’m ready to try my hand at making some Green Tea Whipped Body Butter. To my surprise whipped body butter is actually very easy to make so I made it in no time. As I packaging the body butter in the 4 oz jars I had purchased, I got this bright idea that I should ask my son how my new experiment smells. At 4 yrs. old my son was very vocal and expressive. He also had a habit of being brutally honest about things that he experienced so naturally I knew he would give me his honest feedback.
I was rather proud of my concoction and had no doubt that my son would give me his seal of approval. So at the top of my lungs I yelled for him to come into the kitchen so that he could smell something and tell me what he thinks. Being the obedient son that he was, he immediately ran into the kitchen with his loving smile and said “Yes, Mommy”. I handed him the lid-off jar and asked him to tell me how it smells. He looked right into my eyes and said ” That stuff stinks Mommy” and made a stinky face. Me (the adult) grabbed the jar and told him that he did not know what he was talking about and told him to go back to playing. (Looking back now…my reaction was pretty funny)
Of course, I am no quitter. I had to try again. I thought maybe my son just needed some time for his sense of smell to adjust. I waited about 15 minutes and called him back into the kitchen to smell test. I told him that I had fixed it and it should be better this time. (Of course, I did not change anything…it was perfect as is.) Once again, I handed him the jar, he smelled yet again. He waited a couple of seconds, looked at me square in the face and said..”Didn’t I tell you that stuff stinks Mommy”. LOL At this point, I accepted that maybe “that stuff stinks”. LOL
Needless to say that did not stop me from creating skincare. I went back to the drawing board and came back with a better smelling body butter. I have been formulating ever since.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
La Verte is a natural bath, body, & skincare company where all of our products are not only handmade but also sustainably sourced, scientifically engineered, and Mother Nature approved.
The thing that sets us apart is that our products are made to work with you body’s processes. Our products are designed to help you understand your body and love your natural beauty.
The biggest lesson I have learned is that you must believe in yourself even if no one else does. Your belief must be so strong that even when the days get dark and grim, you still see know without a shadow of a doubt that you can do it.
Do you have multiple revenue streams – if so, can you talk to us about those streams and how your developed them?
Yes. Not only do I have a website where products can be purchased, I have several retailers that sell my products at their business locations and I have 2 retail locations within marketplaces.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lesson I had to unlearn is that “your friends and family will be your biggest supporters when you start your business”. I learned the hard way that was so far from the truth that it is almost comical. In fact, your friends and family will be the least to support you. Do not get me wrong, that does not mean that none of your family or friends will support you. It just means do not start your business expecting your friends and family to be your bread and butter. They will not. In fact it will be people that you do not know that will support you. That is called building a customer/client base.
