Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jennifer DAmato. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jennifer, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the best advice you ever gave to a client? How did they benefit / what was the result? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Tammy came to me after years of yo-yo dieting and feeling like a failure because she regained the weight she had worked so hard to lose. She had been doing this off and on since her high school years and was afraid of letting others see her in her current state and only felt her value came from her size and
looks. She also shared that she rarely, if ever, felt her body signaling hunger and fullness. I walked Tammy through the 10 principles of Intuitive Eating and we addressed self talk and body image issues. She learned new strategies for reconnecting with her body, building trust with herself and coping without using food. Through coaching I was able to help Tammy work through thoughts of “good” and”bad” foods. She also worked through feelings of guilt and food limitations along with learning to listen to her body signals after restarting them again. Tammy shared that she was no longer afraid to be seen in public because she knew her value doesn’t come from the outside.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’ve been right where you are…. I am Jennifer and I help women remove food guilt, feel like a normal eater again and stop obsessing about food.
This is my passion and my purpose.
You might like to know:
I have a B.S. Degree in Psychology
I am Certified as both a Health and Life Coach
I completed all training and assessments to be an Intuitive Eating Counselor
I am registered on the HAES Community Website
But what makes all the difference in the work I do is my own story of becoming an intuitive eater and living a life of complete food freedom.
I started dieting around senior year of high school. I was 17 and already believed there were so many things wrong with my body and what I ate. Throughout my 20’s and into my 30’s I was either dieting, feeling out of control with food or preparing to diet again.
It felt like an unbreakable cycle and one that led to an unhealthy obsession with food and my body size. I was tracking food, workouts, water intake and my weight for years all in the name of “health”.
My disordered eating, that had developed from years of dieting, turned into orthorexia. Everything in my life came second to “my health” and therefore everything, including my health, suffered. It was then that I first picked up the book Intuitive Eating and read it cover to cover.
What’s life like after years of intuitive eating?
I am more in love with my life than ever! I have peace and balance in all that I do which includes family time, self care and work.
I enjoy all foods…I mean ALL foods. I never experience food guilt or question my choices when it comes to what I am eating or how often I am moving my body.
I pivoted my entire career and coaching practice as an Intuitive Eating Counselor and I have never looked back, not even once!
I believe that my purpose on this earth is to help dismantle diet culture and break the dit cycle for future generations.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
I believe you need to highly value looking at your own thoughts on a regular basis. Being highly curious, without judgement, is crucial in being able to show up for my clients as my best self. I would also add that it’s important to be authentic and vulnerable.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Sharing my personal story and understanding the thoughts and struggles my clients have. I am very relatable and listen.
