We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matias Poro a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matias, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Being a creative isn’t for the faint of heart because the thing you’ll hear the most are no’s. I’ve been fortunate enough to have a part-time job that helps me monetarily but if you completely rely on your craft I praise you because it is not an easy achievement and it ain’t easy to maintain. I was recently let go of my job due to budget cuts and I am currently contemplating where my professional life will go and how soon I can make my artistry my full-time job.
Matias, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I got into music at a very early age as my dad is a sound engineer. He helped me record my first set of covers at only four years old in our home office. I stepped away from this side of my life until I was 18 years and began producing for my friends, to later open it up to other clients and eventually becoming confident enough in my craft to create my own project as Matias Poro.
After an EP and my debut Album, I think I’ve finally found my voice as a creative and know exactly how I should be represented and how I intend to represent my Latino and queer communities.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
We could normalize supporting artists buying their merch and supporting their projects monetarily via donations, better venues, and production qualities besides paying/charging for performances.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve been able to build my social media creating a pretty solid posting schedule and defining my online voice/personality so nothing feels out of place. Also interacting with my followers and creating a sense of community.
