We recently connected with Humberto Comellas and have shared our conversation below.
Humberto, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve been working in I/T for several years as director and CIO, however always wanted to run my own business. In 2000, I was provided that chance and joined a local CPA firm as President and Managing partner of their IT practice.
Over the next 6 plus years, I grew the IT practice significantly. During the summer of 2007, I had wanted to focus some of our IT services towards the healthcare industry. Our focus at the time had been mostly legal firms in South Florida. As fate would have it, I sold my interest and started ulltium consulting in late 2007. Then the market crashed and most of the legal business that my old firm relied on dried up. ulltium however having spent 6 months getting traction in the healthcare space was profitable from day one. Fast forward to 2022, ulltium continues to thrive and grew despite the COVID pandemic.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My goal was to be an artist. In fact my ideal job was to be a Disney Imagineer. While in college, in 1980 I was hired by an International bank in their bookkeeping dept. Shortly thereafter, I was approached to help with the banks technology push and was offered the opportunity to study at IBM for the next 2 years. Ultimately that track had allowed me to eventually grow to the role of IT Director. I spent 18 years in 2 large international banks as CIO before joining a large prominent developer Armando Condina as CIO. The time spent at Condina Partners, are the most memorable and rewarding of my career. At the time, Jeb Bush was a partner at firm and George H. W. Bush was 41st president of the United States. One can only imagine the opportunities that experience allotted. I will never forget the manner by which Mr. Codina conducted himself and have always tried to follow his examples.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Having a family and two young children are motivation enough. Being born in Cuba and learning how my family lost everything and had to start over in this country only added to my drive. There is a reason why so many are willing to die to get to the USA. It is truly the land of opportunity for anyone willing to work and sacrifice. My grandfather and mother did anything they had to in order to ensure a better life for my brother and I. Cubans are stubborn by nature and failure was never an option. That does not take away the countless times that I failed. But with the help of my loving wife of 35 years and the grace of God. I got up and kept going. If it was easy, everyone would do it. The fact is, need or passion are the fuel of every entrepreneur.
Do you have any stories of times when you almost missed payroll or any other near death experiences for your business?
I mortgaged my home. I maxed out credit cards, I went months at time without paying myself. But through it all, I never defaulted on any payment. I never missed a payroll. I made sure that everyone I relied on was taken care of. Even during the good times, always take care of those that help you.
