We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maritza Burgos. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maritza below.
Maritza, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
Thank you for this opportunity. I launched my company in 2019 when I lived in Florida. Started to advertise on the Knot and WeddingWire. I booked my first few clients through the Knot. I was super excited to have this opportunity.
Then, of course, the pandemic happened. Some clients decided to cancel or postpone their weddings except for one client. She was determined to move forward with her wedding scheduled in December 2020 and I was all for it! Although I was concerned about the pandemic and the impacts it was having on the entire world, the industry, etc. I focused on ensuring my client got the wedding she wanted.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hello, I’m Maritza Burgos the owner of Butterfly Whisper Events. I’m originally from Waukegan, Illinois but I moved away 20 years ago to Florida. I’m a mom of three amazing human beings! I had the privilege of working for a global firm that moved me around throughout my career so I got to live in Tennessee for a couple of years before moving to Texas back in 2009 and fell in love with the state! However, after six years locally I did move back to Florida for a little while but Texas kept calling me back so last summer I made a big decision to leave everything behind in Florida once again and I am here to stay!
Throughout my career, I worked in marketing where I learned a lot about design work and in other capacities I coordinated many client events, tradeshow events, internal events, and external outreach events. I also served on a local non-profit board where I chaired their annual gala. Applying years of working in fields that required intense attention to detail, creative thinking, and a passion to design creative and impactful material and initiatives is what has served as a unique advantage to the many events I have successfully designed and coordinated.
For years, I dreamt of owning an event planning business. In 2019, I decided it was time to make my dream a reality. I coordinated my nephew’s wedding and the praise I received from family and friends validated I had what it takes!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
As mentioned before, I launched my company, started to advertise on the Knot and WeddingWire, started booking weddings and then the unexpected happened… the pandemic! Wow, I was frustrated. I couldn’t believe it. I had brides cancel while others decided to move forward or postpone. Anyone else would have taken it as a sign that maybe it wasn’t for them but I didn’t. I’ve never been known to give up easily. Instead, I took that time to focus and figure out what I needed to do to achieve my goals. One important detail I was feeling wasn’t working was my location. I was in Orlando, which is a popular destination wedding location but that also meant the competition was fierce. San Antonio was always in my heart so in the middle of the pandemic I spontaneously sold my house, planned my next steps, and visited Texas to see if I wanted to move back and sure enough, as soon as I got off that plane I felt a sense of belonging so I started taking steps to relocate back to San Antonio.
Since I launched my company in San Antonio and started advertising locally, I have been consistently booking clients. What a blessing it has been! This community has embraced me beyond anything I could have dreamt of and I am incredibly humbled and grateful. I take pride in my work and genuinely enjoy building relationships with my clients that, in some cases, develops into friendships. It is so rewarding to use my passion and talent to bring a couple’s visions to life and see them and their loved ones so happy. I look forward to a future filled with many blessings here in Texas.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
A combination of advertising and word-of-mouth has proven to be effective for my business. I’ve been strong relationships with some venues and local vendors that has led to recommendations. I pride myself in my work and the care I provide my clients bring their visions to life and alleviate any stresses on their special day.
