We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Miri Rossitto a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Miri, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Undoubtedly, you need a great team to be successful. Now to be clear, you don’t need a large team or an expensive team, but you do need a team that is aligned with you on your vision and mission. The media has a tendency to praise individuals as leaders and achievers, but I don’t think I have ever met a successful person that didn’t have some sort of a team supporting their efforts.
Building a great team isn’t easy or lacking risk. When I first started my communications firm, I was making just enough money to keep me afloat, but I wasn’t successful by any means. I strongly believe that you need to spend money to make money and I was struggling with where to make some strategic investments with my very sparse cash. I knew that I needed to build out my capabilities and I could no longer do it alone. A friend of mine was looking for a job and I offered her a 90-day project. My hope was that she could help me develop some processes and procedures that would then make it easy for me to make more money and grow. What I very quickly learned was that we were MAGIC together and almost immediately we tripled our revenue. From there we decided to partner up and we developed a plan. Our vision was to create a firm that solved problems for businesses and our mission was to partner and support great people, which included the people that we were going to hire. Initially we focused on hiring the most talented people we knew and with every hire, we would pursue work that aligned with our team’s capabilities.
Today we have a team of 12 and our firm’s success is because of our collective love for our work and each other. That is not to say that building a dynamic culture isn’t a lot of work – it takes a tremendous amount of vulnerability and communication. But without a happy and healthy team we would have nothing to offer our clients. Therefore we prioritize our team by ensuring that they have everything that they need and want, professionally and personally.
My team’s success is directly correlated to my firm’s success, and in the end – that’s my success. It’s all about the team.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was raised by a television director father and a gambling addict mother, so needless to say, my life was shaped by chaos. I never felt grounded or safe because everything moved so fast and nothing was ever the same or predictable. I spent most of my time consumed with trying to foresee the future so that I could develop strategies to manage what was to come. Little did I know that those skills would be EXACTLY what I needed to start and run my own successful firm.
Cowe Communications is a business and brand development firm that specializes in strategic communications. We work with people, companies, and organizations all over the world to make them efficient, wildly memorable, and significantly more successful. Cowe is a boutique firm with a mighty team and we work with clients that want to make positive impacts on the world and the people in it. We achieve this through graphic design, public relations, website development, social media management, copywriting, consulting, and so much more. As a full-service firm we don’t have any one size fits all solutions – everything is designed and customized for each and everyone of our clients.
I am never not in awe as to how my chaotic upbringing really prepared me to lead our team at Cowe. Every single day is different and being able to devise numerous nuanced solutions for a multitude of problems at a moment’s notice is what I do best and it has served us well. What really is the most rewarding part about all of this is that I am driven to make my clients feel safe and secure so that they don’t have to carry the burden of having to constantly fear the future. It’s incredibly fulfilling, it’s incredibly fun, and I’m incredibly grateful.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Authenticity matters. There is hardly a moment where we aren’t being marketed to or sold to. From networking events to television commercials to o line ads and a million ways more, our time is constantly being diverted. What stands out nowadays? The truth.
I don’t like liars and I don’t like to lie. When a client comes to me with a business challenge, there is no path to success for anyone if truths aren’t being told. Honesty can be unbelievably hard and when good business relies on trust, there can be moments of great intensity. I’m an introverted extrovert who also happens to be insecure so it’s important for you to know that these exchanges often keep me up at night. However, the end result is always the same – our clients reach new levels of success and they are grateful for the experience.
Our clients come to us because we care. We care about being credible, trustworthy, and we deeply care about what our clients care about. Authenticity is what drives me and that is what ultimately has built my reputation in my industry.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Client referrals have been the best source of new clients for Cowe Communications. And I in no way mean for that to sound flippant or obvious, but it’s the truth. This isn’t an accident though – client referrals are a calculated strategy that my firm implements on a daily basis. We practice what we preach and diving into our own client experience takes up a lot of our time. There there’s nothing more motivating than compelling positive feedback from a trusted source.
