We recently connected with Baily Roberts and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Baily, thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Starting Vision Magazine was such a daunting risk in the beginning. I had worked as a curve model for over 3 years at that point, and I had witnessed (and myself experienced) discrimination in the industry. Discrimination from our differences in all of us artists that I thought made our industries beautiful. I wanted to create a platform that instead embraced and celebrated these differences and backgrounds for all talent in the fashion and arts industries. I had never started a business before, ran a production team, or been the creator of any kind of larger-scale community. I just felt so strongly called to begin the journey. I was terrified, but my instincts pushed me to embrace the uncertainty. Now, I get to work on this mission that I am so deeply passionate about, I am blessed to work with and hear the perspectives of some of the most incredible artists from all different walks of life, I have this wonderful creative outlet with more freedom beyond modeling, and I get to grow this magazine and production unit with the most incredible team I could ever ask for. I am so excited for the future projects we have in store at Vision Magazine, and I can’t wait to grow alongside my business. I am incredibly grateful.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Baily, and I have now been a curve model promoting self love and acceptance for over 5 years and counting. I use my platform to spread the message that everyone is uniquely them and just who they are meant to be. I carry this message on a larger scale with Vision Magazine. Vision Magazine is a unique publication in the way that every image within our issues is original work created by the Vision Magazine team and collaborative parties. We celebrate the beauty of collaboration within the fashion and arts industries while creating stunning visuals and unique concepts showcasing the talents of artists from all different life experiences and identities. We aim to showcase the skills and perspectives of creators of all genders, races, body types, religions, ethnicities, cultures, etc. We believe in becoming part of the progressive change in equal opportunities for all in the fashion and arts fields.
Our uniqueness and collaboration as creators is what makes fashion and art worthwhile. I want everyone to know that you are powerful within your authentic self and identity. You belong where you flourish as your authentic self.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I believe it’s important for people to show support in whichever way they can. Whether that’s liking/commenting on a post, sharing their services on social media or by word-of-mouth, or even monetarily paying them for their services, showing support of any kind means so much to us. It can be so frightening to put yourself and your work out there, and someone showing any kind of kindness and appreciation for what you’re doing honestly means the world. I know for myself that I genuinely cherish every person who has shown support of my work as a model and of Vision Magazine.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Being able to express myself. It can be extremely intimidating to put yourself out there without caring about being judged, but once you get past that, it’s beyond rewarding. Having the freedom to create freely to process and express my emotions is serenity for my soul.
