We were lucky to catch up with Aaron Bell recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Aaron, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I would say that I was always outgoing and goofy. I was the kid who loved being animated and full of energy. So I guess I learned how to act by being a great imitator and entertainer as a child. As it pertained to the professional craft of acting and modeling, I really listened to what the trainers, coaches and industry experts would say and I’d watch and learn from people who were already doing what I aspired to do. To speed up time, I witless have taken more risks earlier on. As we grow, we tend to postpone our dreams and restrict the risks that pave the way to success. I think the most critical skills you can have in my industry are communication, bravery, stubbornness, gaining insight and masking connections.
Learning how to be your own self-
promoter, getting your name out there so people can see your work and know who you are are also key. You cannot expect people to believe in you if you don’t.
Aaron, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m Aaron W. Bell — actor/model, and model. I started my modeling career in 2006 in the Maryland area by answering an advertisement from a local news paper. Someone handed me an ad at the train station and that changed my life! I landed my first modeling gig at a show at
Howard University. I’m proud of my accomplishments, but what I’m most proud of is how I’ve remained grounded and persevered through all the ups and downs that come along with going after your dreams. It’s not easy. You get a lot of “no’s” and a lot of rejection, but you have to remain focused and keep believing in your gift, no matter what.
What I’m most proud of is being able to watch myself on tv on certain networks and when I moved to la I got the chance to work a celebrity Oscar After Party. I would say that was a life hanging moment, to share the floor with actors and industry giants whom I’ve admired for so long.
If I could tell anyone about this business, I’d tell them it’s not for the faint of heart. If you give up easily, acting and modeling is not for you. If you take the first no snd give up, this isn’t for you. I’ve been pretty much homeless before, but I believed I was witty it. I packed up and loved across the country because I refused to believe the narrative someone else wrote. I’ve had people betray me, walk away from me— and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hurt me. It did. But you
have to have thick skin. And don’t ever stop chasing your dreams.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
The most rewarding thing for me is being able to reach inside my soul and share my heart with the world. I think we all are creatives on some level and to have the privilege of sharing my art with other people is pretty cool. Being able to be a part of something big, then seeing that artist’s vision unfold in print or on TV with me included is a blessing.Being able to tell a story without saying a word— and representing my culture and my people is critical to me. I love being a part of stories about our people, written and produced by our people and told to our people.
Is there a mission driving your creative journey?
I can sum up this question with two words: my son. He is my mission. He is my purpose and he is my legacy. I’m going to leave him an inheritance and I’m not necessarily taking about money. I’m going to leave my mark on the world so he can see what his dad did. I want him to be proud of me. Snd that fuels me. It fuels me past rejections, past homelessness, past prejudice. My mission is to make sure he knows he is loved, supported and that he can do anything he sets his mind to.
While I been chasing my passion, I know the feeling of being broke but I never had the feeling of being rich, that feeling alone is strong enough to make anyone want go harder. But the goal is to leave something behind my son can reap.
