We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Monica Gallego a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Monica, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Before YouTube was even in existence, I learned to apply makeup, basically through practice and copying looks I see on magazines. But eventually, I started learning more application techniques by watching videos online, and learned proper hygiene and business practices when I went to makeup school.
Monica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started doing makeup professionally in 2017 after completing my professional makeup course. And since then, I have done makeup for weddings, special events, fashion shows and pictorials, and have had my work featured in several magazines.
I would say my specialty is clean makeup looks. Most of my clients come to me wanting soft glam, nothing too heavy. However, I enjoy doing makeup for fashion shoots/pictorials the most, because that’s when I can be more creative and think outside the box.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Being professional, showing up on time and being responsive to clients and colleagues.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, it’s seeing my work being recognized and featured in magazine publications. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would even have this opportunity.
